I have a Swiss tool Spirit X and love it. Would I be getting anything better by also getting the original Swiss tool? Any opinion or advice appreciated. I love my leatherman wave and surge but the spirit x seems to be just engineering perfection.

Personally, Spirit X is one of my all time favorites for pliers-based MT, just the perfect balance of size, weight and functionality.

Don't get me wrong, Swisstool is pretty cool too. In some way, it very loosely resemble the connection between Wave vs Surge--where one is a beefier version of the other. Both Surge and Swisstool are what I considered to be heavy weight, and I don't usually carry them unless I expect really heavy duty use.

That mostly depends on your individual needs. If you don't have any reason to need the extra size, leverage and beefiness of the bigger tool, then there's not a lot to be gained. That said, I really dislike the new scissors design on the Spirit and much prefer the classic design featured on the big Swisstool.

No probably not
It has grown on me, built like a tank. The weight of it does make you think twice about carrying it. If you get used to the weight it's a good user. If I'm not carrying it, resides on the laundry bench.
If you really want 1 go the secondary market, that's how bought mine, unused but home engraved name down 1 side:oops:
Good luck
Mitch

I have a both Spirit and a Swisstool. The individual tools inside the Swisstool are more robust, but I never carry the Swisstool because it is too heavy.

Got the SwissTool Spirit X for years and considered the regular ST but I find the spirit quite capable enough and the regular ST seems to have even more ridiculously thick plierheads compared to already quite blunt pliers on the spirit. The bonus side on the regular ST is that it has regular SAK scissors and the frame has ruler and propably has little bit more leverage due the longer handle pieces.

I asked my parents for a SwissTool for Christmas last year, not realizing just how large it was. It sits in the drawer unless I wear it for heavy-duty home projects. It's a very well-made, high-quality tool, but it's a LOT of tool. It hasn't replaced my Wave for daily carry.
