I'm as guilty as anyone for looking forward to grabbing some nice gear when I have spare $, but nothing feels quite like realizing you need/want something for the pack or a hike, and figuring out a way to make what you need yourself from other materials that are already at the casa.
Anytime I do that, it's never pretty, but normally they at least help with the intended need, or worst case, makes me really appreciate the design of a good product when I can finally purchase one
.
Would be really interested in seeing what you have done to compliment your packs and gear by either a home mod, or using other gear (that may have been designed for another use originally) to meet your need.
Please elaborate if you can.
Here are some rough, (very rough) examples:
little pack grill I used a dremel to cut out of the original (that I hit with the lawn mower last year.. please don't ask how
) so I could have something to make coffee on or grill a burger when I'm by myself:
Thought there might come a time when I wanted to carry some extra stuff on overnighters, so remembered a friend had given me this tough guy from his line crew days:
Rolls up nicely, due to the clips on the back, and gets out of the way quickly:
A friend of mine gave me this material left over from a construction job he was doing. (Waterproof, Tough stuff, can't rip it off a nail when driven through, think it was used on the back of billboards?, very much like the same material on the bottom of the condor) anyway..cut out a section which is roughly 6ft by 3ft, and can use as a knee pad, ground cloth, etc..
