I'm just wondering if any of you have used your Khukuri in self defense before. If so, what type of damage did it do? I have been in various edge weapon encounters overseas (Philippines, Sulu, Japan, and Korea) and I have used a variety of edge weapons for defense, so I know what they can do. But I was wondering what the Khukri is capable of. Any information is helpful.

I have not personaly had to use a khuk in self defense, but I have studied knife fighting most of my life. When faced with your average knife a person thinks " I might get cut or I might get stabbed" but facing some one with a khukuri what runs through the mind is more Like " MY GOD, HE'S GOING TO TAKE MY HEAD OR ARM OFF!" The visiaul effect of such a large and wiked shaped weapon ai would think should be enough to detour most peaple.

Not yet, but hope never to use any knife in self-defence. I figure the battle is half lost if I wind up in any situation that could result in this. Seems to me that Sun Tzu(think I got that right) once said that if you can win a battle without fielding an army, you are a greater general than one who has to field an army and fight the battle.

Well, in one incident I got into, and couldn't get out happened in Sulu, Philippines. I got into a beef with one of the local tough guys and he pulled out his native bolo type knife/short bush sword, so I pulled my 17" bladed Barong. Well, I'm still here, but I seen first hand what my Barong could do. Severed his right arm, below the elbow. I assume a Khukuri will do the same.

I have never had to use my khukuri either in self-defense. Like Harry, I would rather not put myself in a situation where I would have to use it in self-defense. I try not to be at the wrong place at the wrong time as much as possible. In short, I hope never to use mine either in self-defense.

Kind of like car insurance, you don't buy it so you can go out and have an accident. You buy it just in case you do have an accident, heaven forbid.

Pakcik Bill.

One stupid Q from me: Is SOF really exist in US?

BTW - on a second thought - you don't have to answer it if it is considered as a very sensitive Q! Or maybe you can delete it if it really offended any party! Being non-American ... curiousity caused me to forward that Q!

Not stupid question at all. Check your email Mohd.

Later edit: Mohd, I ran a search and guess what I found: http://www.sofmag.com/ so check it out.
