I've been looking for my next folder for a week now and I think I've hit all the big names, but have I forgotten anyone?

I've looked at Kershaw, CRKT, Spyderco, Benchmade, Microtech, SOG, Reeves....I guess I should look into kabar and gerber today....but other than those, have I forgotten any names worth looking ito?

In other news, I ordered a minigriptilian, half serrated, black hilt, hole (not thumbstead). Standard 440C. I'm thinking about cancelling it and buying a 960 though. Or maybe an SFM16.

Maybe not *really big* names but worth looking in to:

Al Mar (SERE 2000 / Shrike) I have these both and the quality/fit/finish will just blow you away.

Blade Tech (Wegners) Heard nothing but good things about these, the hunter and mouse models. One of these will be on my short list for next purchase.

How about a swamp rat "rat trap", I dont have one yet, but its going to be my next purchase. I have heard nothing but good comments about these folders and they use premium materials.

you should've give us more details regarding what you expect from your new toy and how much money you prepared to spend... Al Mar and WH are always on my list of toys ;)

Torz mentioned Al Mar as a not as well known but great company and I'll second that. Everyone should at least handle an Al Mar blade, they're awesome knives in the fit/finish department and they fell great in the hand.

Okay, I'm looking for a ~3-~3.5inch folder for under 200 dollars list or 150 dolla street. Of course, preferably more like 50 dolla.

It's got to look cool, but not in a mean way. I pretty much only buy knives that I could feasibly carry every day. My hardcore duty knives are cheap.

I don't want assisted opening, and I want to try a new lock. This excludes variations on liner locks and lockbacks.

That persian micarta from spyderco sure is beautiful though...

just trying to cover all my bases before I take the plunge tomorrow and buy a benchmade 960.

What do you think of framelock knives? I have a couple and love them (2 handmade Greco knives). These days, framelocks are all the rage and, if made correctly, I believe the lock style deserves its popularity. So, yeah, the Maxx series by Camillus...
Buck knives - the Buck/Strider series, the classic 110, and another Buck collaboration, but I forget who the designer is...
Cold Steel - their Voyager series is a good "user" class of knives

Consider the Yojimbo, its somewhat of a personal thing whether you like it or not. Its definately a strange knife, but it meets many requirements.

$112 @ NGK
Different lock, the compression lock. One of the strongest, the knife is not as fun as an axis, but it is still flippable (pinch lockbar between thumb and forefingers and flick open, or flick closed).
I always thought it was rather friendly, it looks like a large box cutter. The blue handle helps this. You can get it in black if you prefer.
This thing is an excelent slicer, but no light weight with a 4mm wide blade. While it is less than 3 inches, it packs a ton of cut and would take it over a larger folder, such as the 960 for performance.

It is a very utilitarian look.

While we are on the topic of compression locks, you should check out the paramillie. Also a bit short, but still a nice size. You get good slice with good strength. It is probably a bit less sheeple friendly, esp when you tell ppl it is called the para-military. It is also $112 @ NGK

If you are not interested in such a thick and tall blade (though the full flat grind fully makes up for it, allowing great cuts with a lot of steel behind them), Benchmades are probably better for you. They have a much more classy look, and axis is unparalled for fun. However I have heard that the 960 can be stiff (i bet you have too, since i think i heard this in one of your threads lol).

Happy knifing...err...that didnt sound right, but you get the idea.

Mods: I am not trying to advertize NGK, just trying to give a perspective on street price. Kill the links if you must.

Go to your local knife shop or knife dealer. A regular knife shop. See if they have a recent Moteng or Blue Ridge dealers catalog. It should look like a small telephone book. The Moteng has Benchmade, the Blue Ridge doesn't but has more selection. Build a want list just by looking at the designs that you like, then do some research on them on here and in trade magazines.

BTW, thats what I am doing, but look at my want list ;).
