Maybe a dumb qestion.

I got my new RC-6 in the mail yesterday. I did not like the plastic sheath. I ordered the black knife with the brown sheath and decided I wanted a black sheath. So I went to work on some Kydex a friend of mine had for some gun holsters we had made and I really like the sheath. (I will post pics of it when I get a chance to take some.)

Question: Did I do anything wrong to the whole heat treat or tempering they do to these knives? The kydex was heated to 250-300 degrees in a toaster oven then wrapped around the blade and smashed down in a press.

Like I said this maybe a dumb question but I want to be sure.

nope wouldnt bother the temper of the blade at all.

your good to go. and congrats on makin your sheath.

You will be fine. Was the edge a pale blue? That's the color you want for 1095 carbon steel. I doubt that your blade ever got anywhere near hot enough to ruin the temper. I once dropped my BRKT golok into my flaming burn barrel. In a panic I fished it out through the flames with a pitchfork. The handle never looked the same, but the blade had turned a pale blue. I contacted Mike, the maker, and he said pale blue was just right. The knife cleaned up and held an edge just fine. :D

IIRC, Rowen tempers at 450 and has stated on the forum that baking on duracoat at 350 won't hurt the temper, so 250-300 won't.

You're fine for two reasons:
1) The Kydex may have been at 300F, but it doesn't hold enough thermal energy to get an eighth inch slab of room temperature steel up to nearly that hot. Maybe right up at the edge, but that probably wasn't in contact anyway.
2) Kydex starts breaking down at 400F, which as stated above is below the tempering for 1095.

I've made a few hundred sheaths on the same Izula at 275 degrees and I still carry and use it everyday.

I think you'll be fine.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks! I think I'm hooked on these knives. I am a sucker for things with warranties like these knives. It's like they are daring you to try and tear 'em up.
Hey r.lynn. Yeppers I took the dare, and these knifes just don't want to seem to get dull!!!. About a Zero chance of one busting. I gave up my how tough test last week. (done for about 2 months) and am now just having fun using them. *I have an addiction to cuttin paper into little curls* I have 100s of them every few days just playin with the edges. If you're like me (and many others here) you will want more I bet:D Oh well its a nice problem to have. And Welcome here. Good people, Good info. Great place. enjoy edgy

Yep you most certainly did, the knife is ruined.. send it to me I'll pay for postage and send you a polished Izula in its place.. :D

Welcome aboard..
