Do any of you guys drive a minicooper?

I've been looking at them and I want to buy one just for the heck of it, it looks like a fun car with good handling.

How are they?

They are appearing all over our travel area. Saw one in Evansville In. & it performed extremely in congested traffic. Another recently, coming from Daytona Beach. Whether they will make a firm grip on the market depends on service, parts available,& buyer satisfaction. It is an old established company . Gas economy should be great.

You're correct on that one because the company is BMW. It would probably be decent as a "train station car" because it could be parked in small spots and can avoid door dings due to its tiny size. Just don't count upon too much cargo or people-carrying utility.

One of my friends has one. Its amazingly fun to drive. Handles well, not fast, but peppy enough. Good gas mileage. Good quality build for the price, which is reasonable. Service can be a bit high, but his reliablity has been very good. Front driver, so good enough in winter, unlike something like the Miata, which is a "two car car" (meaning you've GOT to have two cars if one's a Miata). It is kind of a chick car, but not like a new Beetle.

The front seats are adequate and the head room is good. Forget about the back seat. Surpisingly comfortable for a guy my size (5'11" 315) in the front. We had to put the owner in the back seat last time because neither my law partner (5'9" 250) nor I could physically get into the rear seat:o Kind of looked like a clown car.

We've (my wife's) got one. In a nutshell...

Okay car, handles like a go cart, stops on a dime, corners like a race car. The stability control works well and can be switched off. "Not fast but peppy enough." is a very fair description of the non-supercharged model.

Forget the idea that its size will save you parking lot dings, it's wider than most small cars so will fill a spot side to side as well as any other little car. Nose to tail is where it's small.

Gas mileage is all right. -That's the old-schoolers talking who think it MUST be great, you know, small car=great mileage. Well compared to a '73 Olds Ninety Eight it is. But it isn't really any different than any other small modern motor in its range, maybe worse than some due to its output. For example, my 2 liter VW puts out exactly the same HP as her 1.6 liter Mini. Mileage is roughly the same, perhaps even favoring the VW.

She's got a CVT transmission. I don't like it, I'm a standard guy all the way and it would feel much faster with the stick.

The roof line is a bit odd and when you stop at your normal spot at a red light you may find that you can't see the light. It takes getting used to. Front seat leg and all around head rooom are excellent.

There's a surprising amount of cargo space with the rear seats down.

The run flat tires are very expensive to replace.

Two pushes of the keyless entry are supposed to unlock both doors, but I usually feel like I have to push the button eleven times at least.

You've really got to slam the hatch.

I like my Volkswagen better, my wife loves her Mini.

Are you talking about old mini or new mini?

An old mini is a cheap fun drive. My dad used to have one. I think it was a Morris Cooper. That was hell on wheels. I didn't drive it but when my dad got into the car he was a different driver. Cornering till i swear one of the wheels was airborne. However, my dad tried to have it restored to original. Whilst testing out the car before handing it over to my dad the bloody mechanic got into an accident. After that everything went sour. They sent the different body parts to different specialists to get it done. Paint, bodywork etc. THEN THE GUY WENT BANKRUPT. My father never saw his mini in full again. He just took it as a loss as he was just disheartened about it.

New mini, get the cooper S. Best model out there i think. Very nippy little car. Well they're not really little anymore.

tortoise-

What model VW are you comparing it to?

We would be getting it as a fun weekend car for drives in the country. There is a very active mini club in the Washington D.C.area that is dealer sponcered, with weekend trips ect...

Even with Karens Honda Element I feel the key thing has to be pressed more than the two times its called for. Must be a common complaint with this keyless entry stuff.

Just how expencive are the run flats to replace?

Is the gas milage about the same on the new Beatle?

Will the Golf outpreform it?

Thats always been a real bug to me- If they are going to come back out with something that was very, very, popular once, why do they have to ruin it by makeing it "bigger and better"?

When they came out with the new VW beattle, why not have the old rear engine aircooled bug from 1967?

Why not have the 1967 mini?

Wasn'nt the whole idea to have a cheap but fun little car to drive, not some plush little yuppy trend car that costs as much as a SUV?

Its like they lose sight of just why the original was so loved by people.

Aren't you worried about being the filling in an SUV sandwich in that thing?

Actually in the magazine Geico ins co. sends us, the mini was rated one of the safest cars in an accident. It apparently has a ton of airbags that come out of everywhere in an accident. Plus it stops on a dime and turns quick. In over 40 years of driving, I've always had small cars ( I just like them) and I've avoided a zillion accidents by braking and manouvering. The only time I had one, I was smacked in the ass by a ditso more intent on putting on her make-up than driving.

My Brother and his wife just bought one of these. At least they had the sense to buy the supercharged version. I drove it, and had a blast; it's got plenty of power and enough room for even me to comfortably drive it( I'm 6'6" and 250 lbs). But, I sure wouldn't wanna sit behind me in the back seat!

I've got a plain old 2.0l Golf, 2 door, Mk V, '99 1/2.

She had one go, it was about $300 by the time we drove out with a new one on there. It worked though, I did not have to change a tire in the rain on the side of the highway in the Bronx. The warning light came on, I stopped, took a look at the tires, they looked okay so I continued home figuring it was an electrical or sensor problem. In the morning the affected tire was visibly soft and I drove it in and got it replaced. -Big nail in it.

Will the Golf outperform it?

The 2 liter? -No, not at all. The Mini is a bit quicker and corners much flatter. Of course my Golf was 14K in '99, her Cooper was 20K in '02. That may not seem like a huge difference, but consider that it's nearly fifty percent. The Golf rides much nicer, on uneven surfaces the Mini with the Sport package will beat you to death. I just generally prefer the VW, I like the controls, I like the way it sounds, I like the seating position. For me it's no contest as to which car I prefer overall, even if the Golf isn't the winner on the stat sheet. A Golf with the VR6 or even the 1.8T? Well now you're talking comparisions better made to the Cooper S

How about an ORIGINAL mini coooper..it's funny how soo many people didn't know such a car existed

I have a 2004 MCS with the John Cooper Works (200hp at the crank supposedly)

Run flats $265 to replace. But to replace you need sidewall damage otherwise they can be patched. 205/45/17 Goodyear RSA runflat. A lot of people replace with non runflats and carry fix a flat and a little dc compressor.

A blast to drive. The seats available in the US are OK but not as good as the recaros and sparco's available in Europe. 6 speed gertrag 143 top end. But its best on curves.
