Have you ever bought a knife because you wanted to try out a new type of blade

steel? I did once.....a BM Osborne Gaucho with cpm 4. I bought it more

because it had cpm 4 steel. I wasnt wild about the blade shape but I only

knew of a couple of knives with cpm 4 then...Im sorry I bought it now.

Spyderco Manix 2 CTS-XHP. This has worked very well for me, and I love it. So I guess I lucked out.

I got spyderco Bradley because of m4 . good knife I like it.

+1  I did the same. If not for the M4, I would probably not have bought it. It did not look that interesting, but now I am glad I did, because it feels great in the hand. Even better than my Millie!

I bought my Benchmade 710 to try D2(also my first axis lock) Didn't really like it at first but once I got better at sharpening premium steels I love it.

yep

bought a manix-2 in foliage green for the new cts-xhp

i liked it alright, but it wasn't worth it

Yeah I bought an Endura in ZDP to try the steel. Then bought it in other shapes etc to get a feel for how it performed in different grinds. I have done this with several steels.

Well, my first *real* knife was sort of that case. I had owned nothing but cheap, no name knives, and a SAK or two and was looking to buy a real one. Spent about a month just researching blade steels and such, having no idea just how crazy us knife nuts are about steel, haha. Finally read enough about S30V being a very high quality steel, and being able to sharpen it to a higher angle, yadda yadda. So I bought the S30V Native because it was about as affordable as I could find that steel in. Still one of my favorite knives, too.

Also I have the Ti/RIL m4 military on order only because of the m4 steel. I think I would much prefer the classic g10 military, but I want to get the limited run of this.

Yep - Spyderco Gayle Bradley to try the M4. Bought it without thinking twice, traded it within a week. Excellent quality knife, but too heavy and thick for me and I already have other strong "users" that fit my hand better.

Oh, and a Mini-Skirmish. Great spec's but again, heavy and not comfortable enough to use for me to keep. My only regret there was not keeping it a couple of months longer

For the couple people that say they regret buying the knife, why?

I'm pretty surprised someone was sorry they bought a FFG Manix 2.

Yep - I also bought the Gayle Bradley for the M4 steel, and the Volt (blem) to try out the 390 steel.

I also just picked up a Crusader Forge FIFP from the exchange just because I wanted to hold one of those things!

That sums it up for my thoughts as well. Ergonomics on that knife are completely spot on for large/medium hands IMO. Aside from that the XHP steel is so easy to sharpen even I can do it :p

Also, I still find it hard to comprehend someone when they say a 5 ounce folder is "heavy". Either that person wears a robe /boxers with no pockets all day long or their is an issue of tactile strength that needs to be worked on. I mean, if the knife weighed a pound and was shaped like a hubcap I can understand but, 5 ounces? Really?

You sir, are calling my manhood into question and I think we must discuss this outside....

Seriously tho. The GB was a great knife, but I have other great knives that I like better in this size and weight category. In general it was just a little too heavy for business clothes and a little too thick for jeans. It's just an opinion. I don't carry keys or a wallet in my pockets either. Knives should disappear IMO. Never really got around to testing the M4 really because I knew it would get treaded off fairly quickly. The whole transaction reaffirmed my rule-of-thumb to always personally handle the knives before buying (unless there's a really good sale).

...does rock climbing count for tactile strength?

I bought a CRKT Mini MyTighe just to try out the Veff serrations. They worked well for cutting rope but the blade steel was CRAP! The edge rolled cutting weed whacker string. I've had spoons that cut better than that thing. I threw it in the garbage.

ZDP 189 Delica, Steel seemed awesome, and it is!

Tried an Emerson for the chisel edge with saber ground blade with 154cm. Loving this steel.

Bought an SOG trident for the tanto edge and AUS8. It did disappoint. Super soft heat treat and ended up having a pretty bad lock. Sold it off a while ago to a friend.

Got a Kissing Krane brown mule for carbon steel, which led to two RAT blades.

Yes, I have bought many knives to try out the steel. Lost count, but they are mostly Spydercos...
