Have you ever contemplated an "upgrade" of a knife you already own.

I have recently acquired a few knives that I really enjoy so far. I have recently bought another knife and it just so happens that I have two of these (one on the way). I was thinking of possibly trading the one of those (lets call that Knife A) along with the plain jane version of another knife (Knife B) to get an upgraded version of Knife B. The upgrades I am talking about are in blade steel, handle materials, etc. I am sure people have done and continue to do this daily but I am wondering what has your experience been? Have you regretted getting rid of your plain jane version? Do you feel like you don't want to use the upgraded version as much due to increased value? I know the answer in most cases is keep the standard production model AND get the upgraded one but I would prefer to have just one.

For clarification: Say Knife A is a black/satin s30v para 2 and I would look into trading for a sprint in better steal.

What do you all think?

Nothing wrong with the pursuit of better items for your collection. Maybe you could trade a plain PM2 + something else for a sprint, maybe you would have to sell yours and then buy the other.

I got rid of a BM 710 in D2 to fund a Spyderco Millie purchase, and then regretted it pretty soon after. So I went back and found another 710 in M390. :D It's awesome, I love it, and yes, I do use it and don't feel bad about it. The 710 is a great design and is just that much better in M390.

On the sprint PM2's - I have two and have a third on order. They're amazing and I don't think you'll at all regret picking one up if you already know you like the design.

If it's a sprint, I'd do it. somewhere down the road, I can probably get knife A again if I really wanted. Knife B on the other hand.....

I hear ya. I think it will just have to be the right knife and all will go well. No need to be in any hurry. Thanks for the responses.

Maybe not exactly what you are referring to but.. I really like the mini-grip and the only thing that is so-so are the scales. I buy a plain grip with yellow scales, immediately sell the yellow scales and put the money towards a set of custom scales. I end up with a very unique knife that is better than stock and no one around me has anything like it.

When it comes to Spyderco PM2's and Military models, I only buy the ones in supersteel, fluted titanium or whatever. I really don't have any standard ones to carry. Recently, I've been carrying CRK's.

Upgrading is always a good idea! If a model has more than one iteration I usually buy the 'base' model and if I like it sell it and upgrade

Great minds think alike...

These scales are from Germany too. And also not cheap.

I usually skip the regular version and go straight for the upgrade or wait a few/several months for one to come out.

581 and 810 are regular production though

I'm lusting over a ZT 0560 right now, but I already have (and love) an 0200, so I feel almost like I'm buying a duplicate. They're very similar to each other, but the 0560 has even better materials. I think that's the appeal for me. I completely understand how you feel.

This is how my sickness works...if I have a great folder that does everything well, like the Para2, and I'm "happy" with, I go looking for an awesome fixed. I obsess over that till I find it and buy it. Then I get "happy" with it and then I need a new folder. I obsess over it till I find it and buy it. Then I get "happy" with it and I need a new fixed...it a vicious cycle.

Hi, my name is maddogg and I have a problem.

The 0200 and 0560 only have two things in common - They're flippers and are made by ZT.
They are not close to each other at all. Completely different beasts.
