Have you ever had a problem with D2 staining?

Before I got a knife with D2 steel I thought that D2 would stain pretty easily.
I think I saw a picture here of a benchmade 710 with a D2 that had a stain from cutting an apple. I've cut apples with D2 with no trouble.

I've soon had my BM 15020 bone collector for an entire year, and I have carried it quite a bit in hot sweaty pockets. There are no stains on the blade.

Have you had D2 stain? Can it get a patina after a while?

D2 will patina, but the process is slower due to the higher chromium content. This Queen Canoe has a forced patina. I sanded the blade before doing it, and when I did there was a very slight patina from previous use that was being removed. I imagine it would take quite a bit of normal use before being really noticeable.

I never considered it to be a problem, though. No issues with rust in my experience either.

I have three D2 knives. One Knives of Alaska Boar Hunter and two Ontario RAT's. The KOA knife is stored in a tanned leather sheath and still has it's satin finish with no staining. The other two are coated blades, but the edge bevels are not stained either. The RAT-7 is a camp knife and has been beaten on pretty good over the last few years. I don't baby the steel at all and they all are unstained. I like the steel a lot for hunting and general field use.

I've heard that D2 can stain too, but take a look at my 15+ year old Dozier Pro Skinner is at the bottom of the following pic. This knife has performed years of camp service and skinning chores and seen quite a few miles. It has seen time along the salty Alaskan coast and the interior of the state too. From potatoes to moose, this blade has done it.

There is wear on the black Micarta scales from friction inside the Kydex sheath but the blade could almost pass for new. This knife has seen some serious use as a cutting tool but it has also been taken care of along with the rest of my gear while out in the field. A rinse and a wipe down, but nothing more than that. No patina here!

Like the others here, never seen it stain. Living in South Texas our summers can be pretty brutal with high heat couple with really high humidity. My Queen knives never have stained. I did get some tiny rust flecks after a week of being in my sweaty pocket out on the job site, but the were very tiny and flecked off with my fingernail.

I have a couple of Kershaws with D2 blades and they go to the job with me as well, and with a few added scratches, they look the way they dd when I bought them.

I have the Ontario RAT 5 and RAT 7 in D2. No staining there, either.

I like D2 quite a bit and found it to be a great knife steel.

Mine's darkened. There's something like a hamon line where the part of the blade that's exposed when closed is darker than the rest of the knife due to sweat.

D2 will stain easily but will take a long time to develop a normal "patina". I have been using a BM D2 knife in the kitchen for about 5 years now and it's still in great condition, just some light staining. It really is more rust resistant than the other tool steels.
