Hey guys,

I was shopping at garage sales with my wife yesterday when I stumbled on a Western Auto Wizard axe. The edge has some minor chips in it which makes me think its good hard steel. I paid 5 dollars for it but it needs a new handle and the edge re-profiled. Have any of you guys ever heard of this brand? I am curious where and when it was manufactured. The guy I bought it from said his father bought it after WW2. Any one know what steel was used in this axe?

Did some googling and it seems the Western Auto axes/hatchets were probably made by Collins sometime in the 1950s/1960s.

Thank you. I did a brief google search as well and didn't turn up much other than some ended auctions. Were collins good axes during this time frame?

Western Auto was an automotive and hardware store chain. I remember going there with my father when I was young. Like many retailers of the time they often sub-contracted production to other companies.

Western Auto branded all sorts of products. bicycles (Western Flyer), "Tough One" Batteries, "Wizard" Tools, "TrueTone" electronics, and "Citation" appliances if you are 55:eek: or older you probably remember Western Auto, Montgomery Wards, Gambles and others.
i live in a small mid-western town and there was a Western Auto store here when i was a kid.
i have two Wizard carpenter's hatchets:D. the ones with mail pullers the steel is most excellent.
