Have you ever made an exception?

We all have our likes & dislikes when it comes to our personal knife preferences. For example, some of us like flippers and some don't, same with coated blades, serrations, tantos, etc.

So my question is - was there ever a time when you bought a knife that had something about it that you normally don't like? It could be it was just a great price, or maybe you really liked the design but it only came in a certain configuration. I'll start...

Kershaw Blur - liked everything about it except the assisted open

Griptilian - found one with a coated tanto blade (both dislikes) but couldn't pass on the price...I think it was $45

Kershaw Skyline - liked everything about it except the flipper

My Boker Federal is the only Chinese made knife I ever bought or even considered buying.

Since I'll most likely never be able to afford one of Gus' pieces I figured I had to bite the bullet on it.

Quality is good though and it doesn't say made in China on it so I have no complaints.

I'm not big on heavy over-built folders but if I'm going to have one, I figured it may as well be good-lookin'! :D

Absolutely. I'm generally not a fan of serrations, but will take one for the team when necessary. A while back I stumbled upon a Hinderer-designed Gerber Firestorm at a local pawn shop. They wanted $20 but I talked 'em down to 10. Even though the serrations take up a ridiculous amount of the primary edge, I couldn't say no to a deal like that. Here's a pic so you know what I'm talking about.

I was also never a fan of serrations, until I got a Spyderco SE Cricket. That knife is so useful at work that I have bought other knives with them.

I'm one of the weird ones that thinks the blade shape on of the PM2 looks weird. I own one though, I do like everything else about it.

Also, i don't like assisted opening, or 8cr all that much, but I still bought a Volt II. I regret that one.

I do this with many items and it happens with knives, but like most people I try not to make too many exceptions, but it depends on price. Some of the exceptions are assisted openings, non-flippers, materials, and pocket clip position.

I don't usually like serrated portions on blades but Kershaw Guy forced me to buy a blem ZT 350 this morning. How dare he dangle an email with such a low price to someone with no control. :D And free shipping on top of it. It has a black blade so I am considering it an early Black Friday purchase.

The nerve of that man ;)

All my ESEE's...I'm not a fan of coated/painted blades, preferring stainless satins or fine stonewash, but here I am with a safe full of ESEE's.

I don't dislike serrations, rather I prefer a plain edge. I've never had any sort of LE so today I made an exception.
I found nothing not to like.

I generally buy knives with uncoated blades and plain edges, but through the years a few serrated or coated blades have made it into my collection (ZTs and some serrated Spydies). I usually avoid knives made in China or Taiwan, but have a Tenacious and a few Cold Steels.

When I first got started I was more strict about which knives I bought. For example, I didn't own folders with thumbstuds for a while. However, as my collection grew I began to try out something new every once in a while, since my actual knife needs are covered I can play around with other designs just for fun.

ive never liked framelocks, or knifes with no scales, and just plain metal handles. well today i sprang for a kershaw cryo, and im seriously in love with it for both the reasons i thought id hate it

A super ugly gigantic tactiCOOL Camillus Flipper at Walmart. It was mis priced for 2.99 I couldn't pass it up. I've often thought I should sell it or trade it but I absolutely hate selling or trading knives.

I don't like thin tips or hollow grinds much, but I got the Kershaw Skyline.

And btw, you can take the torsion bar out of the Blur and de-assist it. It has a detent

I bought a composite CPM-D2 leek even though it was right hand only. It was inexpensive and I wanted to try the steel. So I made an exception to my ambidextrous knives only rule.

I don't like smooth, slick steel handled knives. I also do not like warncliff blades. I was out of town for business and forgot to pack a knife. I felt naked. I drove to a sporting goods store and bought a composite blade Leek. It was one of the best knives available in the store.
