Have you ever NOT wanted to buy a knife because it was so pretty?

You know, once in a while I will see a knife that doesn't make me drool, but slaps me in the face because I never imagined a knife could look like that. This happened to me only a couple times.... Jot Singh Kalsa. Darryl Ralph.
Bruce Bump. David Broadwell. But I'll look at it, and realize that I just don't ever want to own it because I will like less as the owner than as someone who is looking at a masterpiece. The same thing, I imagine would hold true of any great work of art. After a while it just becomes another piece of furniture, and I know that I'll never be able to appreciate it as much if I own it.
Does this ever happen to you guys?

Definitely, sometimes things are attractive because they are rare and hard or impossible to achieve.

I look at the Jot Singh Khalsas and say, "Someday." :D

I want one of his knives bad. Lapis handles.

My brain seems to have developed a distinction between knives as tools (which I buy and use), and knives as art (which I look at, want to buy, but walk away from).

I'm very glad that I have developed this distinction: if I hadn't I would own quite a few customs (that would simply sit in the safe), and I would have even less spare cash than I do now.

I hear you, and yes I've avoided buying knives that are too pretty. However, there are always a few that call your name. The 'lookers' will be the first to sell if I need money.

No! If I should ever hit the Lotto in a major way, besides a ride in my new Ferrari, I let you come over and drool over my Warenskis and Kious stuff. Maybe you can even handle a John Smith art knife, or a Van Barnett.

Ahhh.... the stuff dreams are made of.

Yep; been back and forth over the last couple of weeks whether to get a Burn, or two MTs (Scarab & Terz). From what I understand the Burn is very solid, just not any more practical than any other stiletto to use. The MTs, well they might be.
Rats...
