Have you ever regretted using a knife?

I've seen plenty of threads on people talking about how they regret selling or trading a knife and how they miss it. I searched and haven't seen any on people regretting USING a knife.

I'll explain...

I hate having safe queens. I like to use knives the way they were intended and I always sell or trade ones I don't carry. BUT, I do have one safe queen...a limited edition Benchmade 806bk-1101 AFCK. This was a grail that took months of hunting down and finding the right person to make the right deal at the right time. This knife is perfect and beautiful and one I want to keep mint since it's almost impossible to replace. But, this knife is screaming to be used! I hate seeing it collect dust. I just wonder if I'll eventually regret using it and not keeping it mint. After all, I don't think it hurts to have one knife that's just a showpiece.

So have any of you decided to use a knife that you wish you had locked away and kept mint? Maybe it's gone up in rarity or value or whatever the reason may be??

NSQ all the way brother

I'm not sure why you are not using the knife. It's obvious by the way you talk about it, that it's never getting sold. So you're not keeping it as an investment. You can't take it with you when you leave this plane of existence, and in all likelihood it will be used by someone someday. Why not let that someone be you?
So really, what are you afraid of? Would you drive that 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California? Or would you just rub it with a diaper?
Live life my friend, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

The knives I buy, regardless of price, always get used. There are a few knives that are safe queens that were gifts from friends or family. Those knives are not worth much money, but they have sentimental value and could not be replaced. I wouldn't use any of them.

No. Never. Using a knife makes me like it more. Nothing more satisfying to me in this hobby than taking a new knife (shooting some unused pics of course), then using it and seeing the wear/scuffs/patina accumulate. Truly makes the knife "yours".

Yeah NSQ is my philosophy as well. But I feel like it all depends on what attracted you to the knife in the first place. If functionality was the main attraction then I don't see why you wouldn't use it. If however you just really admired it for design, rarity or whatever else, then I can see not using it. But it sounds like you're itching to use it and keep it forever. Scratch that itch, tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

No haven't regreted using one yet. Maybe if i break one for a purpose where shouldn't have used it maybe but all my knives are users. i actually rarely buy new knives. I'm sure even if you use that 806bk-1101 you will get good deal of your $ back. If it breaks Benchmade will replace it. So. I'd personally use it, i don't own any knives that couldn't be used.

I was just using my small sebenza 21 with snakewood inlays to cut up some cardboard boxes at the curb, sacralieges to some. I love admiring my new knives, but if love using them.

I usually carry my old scratched-up Zaan every day, and had three ANIB large Sebbies in the safe. I've recently sold one, and still have two left in there. One is a Regular, and it is smooth as silk, and I might try to start using it for daily carry, and let my Zaan have a well-deserved rest. The other new Seb is my birthday Sebbie which is a rare find. Not really sure what good it is, just sitting in there. I hate to get the first spider-trails on them, but once I do, then all is good to go.

I've found a loop hole for the whole "no safe queen" thing. If you have a knife that you want to keep in good shape but not just have it sitting in the safe..... just carry it but not use it to cut anything. :p

At least take it out and start carrying it. You'll feel better. It's not like you ever have to use it--that's totally voluntary.

Thank you all for the great replies! Since no one has any stories that went something like they decided to use particular knife and a few years later it was worth an extraordinary amount of money or something, sounds like I should use it! Haha.

Thanks guys!

The only reason you might regret it is if you use the knife and realize that there's something about it you don't like. Then you may wish to sell it but won't get as much money for it. Of course you won't know if you don't try...

I'm with Silvanus - I've several knives for one reason or another have sentimental value that I don't use. More so out of fear of damaging them or losing them. So those sit in the drawer. Everything else gets used sometime or another.

I guess I do have to concede that I have purchased a few knives strictly just to collect that I knew when I purchased them that it was with intent that they will go to the kids one day, and I have no plans to use them. The kids aren't even aware of them.

Oh that HAS happened to me, and I'm sure many others. Still, absolutely no regrets!

Believe it or not, I've had knives that I used and still brought double what I paid for them. That's why Busses are such a great "investment". Beat the crap out of them and sell them for twice what you paid!

I use all of my knives. I just don't abuse the ones that are difficult to replace. As others have mentioned, you can't take it with you when you're gone.
