have you ever ripped a clip?

Pocket clips really are the superior method of carry for a folder, if concealment and quick access are important. But the clips that I have handled are poorly designed. My Kershaw Starky Ridged has the clip drilled only into the G-10, my Odyssey has brass nuts inlayed into the handle for the screws, but the clip wobbles, and my old endura has a plastic clip. My fear is that oneday I will walk too close to a fence or concrete wall and snag the clip (it happened to my leatherman sideclip). My question is, has anyone ever torn the clip right off their knife? It doesnt seem like it would be hard to do on any of the knives I have. Which manufacture has the best clip design?

What were you doing when you "ripped" that Leatherman?

John

P.S. Try to keep about a foot away from all walls and fences.

I bent the clip 70 degrees on my leatherman after getting my shirt and knife stuck on a lumpy concrete garbage can.

hello,

Yep i have ripped one!! it was on a GERBER COVERT folder that i have i use to make Carry products for. i had i Cliped into my left pocket and moved to close to a wall in the DOJO when practicing in our DARK room designed for No light Sensitivity techniques we are working on, and as i rounded the corner the Clip wedged against the Door Corner as i came into the room and it was removed and Bounced off the floor.
Upon turning on the light the clip had bent to the side and was extended about 2 inches out of where it was.

not a big deal but i had to disassemble the knife and press the clip back into position.

I think the Dumbest Clips i have seen are the ones that use the blade pivot Bolt assembly as there main anchor point,,,Way bad idea..

But thats why i carry a Fixed blade as my Primary everyday carry blade for a possible defencive situation(they dont need a clip) 8-)

I do think that honest Actually spring tempered Clips would be better if you just have to carry a folder. they would be far better than Mild steel Sheet metal clips bent to shape.

anyway my .02

I once was carring a BM 9100SBT Auto-Stryker and basically, I was getting out of my car and I guess it got caught on the door or something because it bent out so now I haven't been able to get it fixed because it's an auto and it's illegal to own

Hello!

I manged to rip the clip clen off from my (old style)Spyderco military, i jumped/rushed/bounced out of one of our APC's while in Bosnia this summer and "clak", clip gone!
I don't think that this would have happend with the new as this is, at least to my understanding, attached to the liner.

Just my 0.7 cents...

Got a Spyderco Endura (old style, plastic clip) and the Steel model of the same, never had a problem with the clip, even though I often hang my hat from it when I go inside (pappy always raised me to understand that roofs were invented so you didn't HAVE to wear a hat indoors...forward OR backwards...).

Got a buddy, though, who's gone through about six Delicas. I don't know what he does to snap that clip off, but he sure does it GOOD! He just got one of the new model Enduras, with the metal clip, and he's been much happier with it.

Had the clip rip off a Benchmade Eclipse/Ascent about a week after I had bought it when the knife became caught in the arm of a chair. I thought this was pretty poor performance and contacted Benchmade. They admitted their early production was having problems with the clips and fixed it without charge.

I have never ripped one but I have bent the hell out of a few of them. Just popped 'em off and bent 'em back.

I ripped the metal clip off one of my Gerber EZ-Outs. I was getting out of the car, and I'm not sure what I snagged on, but one of the little metal tabs that holds the clip in place was broken right off. Gerber mailed me a replacement clip, no cost. Back like new in no time.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

I caught the clip on my spyderco delica(zytel) awhile back. It chipped the cutout in the handle and allowed the clip to twist back and forth on the knife. I brought this up in the spyderco forum and a few other people said it had happened to them. Spyderco said they were planning on redesigning the clips very soon.
A little epoxy fixed the clip on mine and it is very tight and no wobble.I'd say spyderco's overall quality on clips is very good.
From my experience benchmade clips need some work. My friends either wasn't tempered properly or was made of a matrial with a poor memory for retaining shape. It became very loose and couldn't be tightened.

The only knife that I have actually had the clip riped clean off was a cheap $5 knock off that I carry while wade fishing in saltwater. Had several bent out of shape including my Sebenza. Clips sometimes scare me, in that, they can catch on something snatching the knife from your pocket. I had this happen at the pistol range with my Mini-Socom. Lucky enough to spot it in the dirt during the session. Not a cheap knife to lose and I no longer rely on it's clip because it is positioned too low for such a small knife. I also don't buy any knife with a clip that cannot be removed and straightened as I am always bending mine.
