Have you ever used a knife up?

I'm not asking about breaking blades, and spine whacking till the lock breaks (btw, spine whacking is as practical as checking your face for fireproofness). I was just doing my bi-hourly sharpening of already-razor-sharp knives and was wondering how long it would take to sharpen the knife unusable? Have you ever used/sharpened a knife so much that the edge became unusably thick or the blade became too narrow all together? My Grandpa suggested I sharpen twice a year so that I don't wear out my knives, I guess I sharpen 182 times too much!

My grandpa's knife is in my possession and there isn't much blade left on either of the two. I can remember him always sharpening it on a cinder block on the bannister of the front porch at his house as a youth. By the time he died there was a flat smooth spot from this knife right off the end of that top finish block on the top of the wall. I know he sharpened the small blade down on purpose because he called it his 'pipe cleaner' and that blade is the closest one to being used up I think I've run across in my life.

I personally have a few I've had all my life but they are still quite useable. I have retired a few FRN knives in my lifetime but those basically were my beaters. You know, the knife you loan out to others because you don't care if they dig out first base with the blade or use it as a screwdriver as much as you would one of your high dollar ones. I most always have a beater in my left pocket and one for just me in the right. Naturally the beaters get the grunt work and if someone asks to borrow my knife that is the one they get.

Yes, my Buck folder I had when I was 14. I was a sharpening fool when I was a kid and sharpened it at every opportunity. I sharpened on rocks, bricks, stones and my mom's plates, dishes and coffee mugs. By about 22, the blade did not have a belly anymore. Instead, the blade was worn up towards the spine. Needless so say, I learned from that.

Two of my 110s have been sharpened down to the nubbies. Locks are still good. Have newer ones I don't use so damn hard....or sharpen with a file.

Only one, an old air force pilots knife that I got from my dad way back when I was a kid. People say practice sharpening on cheap knives first, it's good advice ;)

I found the CAMCO Barlow.
Left and right are my FIL's and the Toothpick on the bottom was my Dads.

I think the Barlow about makes the grade.
But that Dexter is something!

That knife came from my wifes Grandfather via her Grandmother.
I really wish I knew the story behind it.

I gave my brother in law a BuckLite about '90 or '91. I saw him using it about 3 years ago and the blade was like a filet knife. I told him I need to get him a new knife, but he wouldn't hear of it. Lots o' good life left in that Buck! :D
