I've been trying to find out what the name "Tai Goo" means in Chinese all my life... Even my own parents couldn't tell me for certain. My father was born in Hawaii and never learned Chinese... My grandfather's first name was also Tai, "Tai Chong Goo". He's famous for making ukuleles. My grandmother's middle name was also Tai.

I guess, now I know... The wonders of the internet!

Tai Goo (Old auntie). Yoyo turned me onto it! LOL :)

Disclaimer:
Actually, I think it translates generically more closely to “Great ancestor”,… but I thought it was kind of funny. It’s also kind of funny that from what I can gather on the web, it’s not pronounced Goo, but rather "Gogh".

Who am I and what do I do that makes me famous?

sounds profane. If I do it, I just get a whole bunch of science articles and stuff.

Colwell comes from the name of a village near Hadrian's wall at border of England and Scotland. We were Scotts, we lost, we moved to the US. British kicked our butts out.

Now, there are more sheep in Colwell than Colwells in Colwell.

Internet.

I've found out things about myself,... I never even knew! What fun!

I knew my grandfather made some ukuleles, but never knew how famous he was. Funny too, I didn't find out until after I started playing ukulele myself.

Tai Chong Goo:
(Here's a nice example of his work)

His brother, my great uncle Peter, was a famous Hollywood actor! His stage name was Peter Chong:

(No relationship to the actor Tommy Chong of "Cheech and Chong" as far as I know, but haven't really dug into it much yet.)

Tai - what does "Akai" mean?

Don't lie to me - I would know it.

ok, no I would not, but I always like to say that to people.

So, the artisan/artist thing is a common thread in your family. pretty cool.

First person with my name in America 1630s
a Captain in the Illinois Army in civil war
a marriage in Rhode Is 1830s
a owner of an saw mill 1860s
a priest accused of child molestion
a guy with same name and birthday in 1888
a politician in Michigan
a guy with a 38' commercial boat, a Alaska commercial fishing permit, winner of pistol competitions, a federal court case, who builds knives, Hey thats me.

Cool. When I Google my name there are 68,000 hits, but I'm the first one. 4th one too.

...mmm, google fame....

Kevin,... akai means "red", which could signify blood. I really don't know why my grandfather used that pseudonym. My Father did work in the uke shop though, so maybe he knows. My dad wasn't even aware how famous his father had become until I told him what I found on the web. My dad (Ben Goo) went on to become a fairly well known sculptor. The other "Ben Goo", my son, is the aspiring musician that comes up quite a bit. The "Eric Goo" is my brother, who is a very well know orchid breeder.

When I Google people, it sometimes helps to add something to the name to narrow the search when there are a lot of people with that name. For example with Ron, I just put his full name plus "New Jersey", which I got from his BF profile. For Perter Chong I added "actor".

Since the name "Tai Goo" isn't all that common, I come up at the top of the search,... but if I search Tai Goo "knives" the results are slightly different.

The search engines must be getting better,... this thread came up in the "Tai Goo" search within hours of the OP.

Here's another interesting site. I don't know how accurate it is...

http://howmanyofme.com/

Google Phillip Patton, and the first hit is my website. There's also a journalist and a fertility doctor. :D

Phillip, I followed that link and it said, "There are 1 or fewer people in the U.S. named Tai Goo."

I'd say that's amazingly accurate! I'm running at about .5 percent at this point. ;)

NOTE To KNIFE MAKERS:
Bladeforums has a strong search engine? and google is just a search for a name or words? right?

So I found out that when listing knives - IF you word your post just right.
It will be picked up by google and that link? - hit? will be very close to the top of the search page.

So like if I make a post - Custom Handmade Pocket Knife
Chances are - in a day or so? Google will pick it up -So when you type in Custom Handmade Pocket Knife --- a link to that for sale thread will be very close to the top of the search page.
It probably has to do with the traffic this place gets - right?

Even my name will pop up with a link to Bladeforums in search ......
They know that I'm here..:eek::):rolleyes:

Well, mine used to pop up pictures from shows and hammer-ins....

Then along comes the band All American Rejects. One of their guitar guys is named Nick Wheeler. Needless to say, top 40 band people get a lot more attention than knifemakers (I know it's hard to believe!!!) so now the first 5,000 pages of results are for him. LOL :D

Funny story... a few years ago I get an email with tons of questions about my life in the band, when I got started playing guitar, what life on the road is like, what we do when we're not touring... etc. !!! ;) :D

I reply that I'm sorry, but he has the wrong Wheeler. He (she?) writes back saying, "Oh sorry bout that. So do you like the All American Rejects?"

ROFLMFAO!!!! :D

We do look almost exactly alike ;) :p

If you type Kevin Colwell and Deception or " " and Interviewing you will get a lot of articles about how to tell when people are lying to you. Yes- the stuff works. I am better at science that at knifemaking. Both require creativity and patience, believe it or not. If you just type Colwell and Deception you get both me and Lori, my beautiful and brilliant (and tolerant) wifey pooh.

there are actually a lot of Colwells listed as scientists or profs or m.d.'s, but I don't think I am close relatives. Everyone from that area of Scottland that became England is likely to have chosen Colwell as their last name. Our families do probably come from the same place.

Tai - you seriously cracked me up with the "less than one person".
kc

Nick - that is one killer forge you got going behind you.

You need a wig to pass for the other guy. maybe you could fool just a few young groupies... that would be enough.

Kevin, I think your area of expertise is very interesting... how to tell if someone is trying to deceive you. It's something I've studied on a little out of necessity (being a father).

As a side note, I got an email from a person that said in fact Goo does mean "aunt". So, "great aunt" or "old auntie" may actually be the correct translation. I've also heard Goo means "mushroom"... Tai Goo (big mushroom)... I think I'd rather be called big mushroom than old auntie.

I can relate to that. It used to be that when ever I searched anything with the word "Goo", the "Goo Goo Dolls" dominated the search. It did fade with time though.
