Today was my first loss of my edc. I have lost other items before... wallets, keys, watches, glasses, and a ring (wife wasn't happy about that)..., but never my edc knife. I lost Wenger Micro Light Tool Chest during a short trip to IKEA. I'm still recovering :p I'm not super upset, but a bit sad. I guess there is always the first time.

I'm pretty sure many of you lost a knife or knives along the way of edc/back packing/hunting/trip, etc.
Well, tell us which knife/knives you have lost, how long was your grief (hrs, days...) and what did you do get over the loss.

my long story:

Since the January 1st, I've been carrying the Wenger micro light tool chest (MLTC) as an experimental 1 edc knife for 1yr challenge. Here i am, less than 2 month into the challenge, i lost the knife.
I used to rotate recruit, DF2 H1, HK enigma, or REI crimson mini grip in addition to a LM Micra for edc. Then I read a forum posting about VN classic late last year.

One of the poster mentioned that a Classic is adequate for most edc task and even a well known hiker carries no other than a SAK classic. I thought I don't know about hiking with a Classic only, but I agreed a small SAK is good enough for my urban jungle life. Therefore the challenge is on.
so far I didn't run into to much difficulty with most tasks, except cutting apples for my little one. l began to love this little SAK.

Well, this afternoon I got a message from my phone company saying that my phone bill is due. I thought that is strange for I just paid the bill. I went to a local store and my wife & kid wanted to tag along. sure enough there is no bill due....weird. Then, wife & kid wanted to go to IKEA for fun. my little one loves to walk around the IKEA. I felt a little awkward going to a crowded place for I was in swimming shorts and a T shirt only. Plus pockets on the shorts are shallow. Something was off, my spydie sense was firing crazy, but.....well, who cares... off to IKEA.

Wife & kid enjoyed the time & ice cream, we returned to the car then I realized my knife is missing! I reached for the car key, and the knife wasn't there! there's no coin pocket on this shorts, where I usually keep the small knife. "Ah that sofa". well, it was long gone, couldn't find it. I'm hoping someone drop it to lost & found. I will check up with IKEA tomorrow. Gosh, I really liked the knife!!!!!! this is why pocket clip is must! well...., c'est la vie, ey? I'm thinking about picking up a delica or continue the challenge with a Classic. we will see.

I lost a Victorinox Tinker my grandpa gave to me. I actually cried when I told him. He said some choice words basically telling me to man up (I was about 8). After this he takes me out to a gun show and says I can pick any knife I want. I think I got my first mora. Nothing too crazy about my loss. But it was one of my worst knife moments.

I lost a custom push dagger that was pretty nice, interestingly enough losing it would not have been as bad as losing a folder i carry frequently but is of lesser value.

Leatherman PST II and Kershaw Chill with thumb studs which was an exclusive thats not made anymore. I still mourn both of those losses. One day I will replace that Leatherman I lost all those years ago, as for the Kershaw Chill I hope the Skyline Damascus I have on the way can fill that void that it left when I lost it 4 years ago. They are gone but not forgotten.

Yesterday is gone.
A new knife awaits.

I speak from experience, having lost many knives.
They are inanimate objects.
If you reply "But my custom blade has a soul, beaten into it by the bladesmith's skill."
I shall simply point out that it is possible a blade with a soul chose to find a new owner.
Unless you dropped it down a volcano, somebody else will find it & put it to good use. Don't pine for the lost knife. Get on with the next knife.

Yeah I've lost a couple for various reasons, and it totally sucked at the time. So I bought new ones. Sure, they aren't exactly the same and don't have some of the character marks the old ones had, but in time I'll probably love these ones more. If I don't lose em...

I have lost a few knives over the years.

How do I get over it?

Simple. Buy another knife! :)

Only one I really care about one way or another was one of the original Leatherman PST tools that my father bought me in the 80s as a Christmas gift from LL Bean. I had carried that tool for many years and used it a lot. My dad passed away in 2000 and I lost that tool while working for a company doing a fair bit of travel in the early 2000s. It wasn't that the tool was that great, but the fact that it was a gift from my father.

kodachi, buy or make a pouch sheath to attach the small knife right to your keyring, and yuou wil never loose it again. It also makes it impossible to leave the house without a knife. For a while, Iused the black fake leather pouch that Victorionx sells, but I didn't like it, too shallow. Any leather person can make one, I did this one out of some scrap leather Ihad around.

Or, you can just attach the knife to the keys by using a quick release hook of the type that comes on some ID tags that hang around your neck.

Hah! this is exactly what i did!

I have only lost one knife in my lifetime. I was at work and it got caught on a loading strap in the truck I was working in. I didn't notice and kept loading the truck. As soon as I was finished I went to cut some wrap off another skid to load on the back and the knife was gone. I searched up and down that truck and even went to our transport department to get the driver(s) to look for it but it was never found (I'm guessing one of the drivers got himself a well used knife.

It was a Scherade X timer that I bought for cheap work knife at one of my first jobs. I owned it for 12 years before I lost it. All the coating had been scratched of the blade and it was extreamly well used. I think I'm more attached to the memories that surrounded that knife and its uses then the knife itself.

Then it gave me an excuse to go out and buy another cheap knife to destroy at work :)

That was good advice. Cry, cope, recover when a loved one dies.

When you lose an object like a knife, buck up and get a new one. Very simple. Spilled milk.

The only knife i ever lost was a spyderco endura, when they were first out in the early 90's with the integral plastic clip;at that time it was like losing a sebenza.once i knew it was lost & gave up the search i ordered another one.luckily its the only knife out of hundreds i have ever lost in 30 years....

I lost my Benchmade 707 sequel, which my aunt (yes, my aunt) gave me for my birthday as a teenager. I think the TSA might be responsible, because I had been doing a lot of traveling at that time. I have not gotten over the lost even though it was a few years ago. It was one of my favorite knives, and it had sentimental value.

Spyderco Para 2 Blue g10/m390
GEC White Owl
GEC Bullet End Jack
ZT 560 heavily customized
These are just the ones off the top of my head.
I need to quit loaning out knives huh?

If I lost a knife I liked it would bug me for about a day and than I would move on with my life. It's a knife.

I lost a benchmade griptilian with a black blade in the woods. I never really got over it because the price jumped massively since then i was saving to get them when they were 70$ and now there like over 100. Recently bought a para 2 since 100 for a grip just aint worth it. This is only my 2nd high end knife.

I was sailing on a catamaran a couple years ago and my BK14 slid out of my back pocket. I bought another one...

Wow! You have no idea where any of them went? That sucks man. :(

I lost this one.

Advertised in paper. Nope.

Then about a month and a half later, I went out in back yard and it had got its clip stuck in a wire mesh thingy and been hanging there big as ya please.

So.... .I got it back. :)

But I did lose a Vic Executive given to me by a very good friend. Had it on a small lanyard and must have yanked it out with keys when at gas station. More a sentimental loss than monetary.

I "lost" my beloved CRKT M-16 tanto folderin a friend's pickup on a fishing trip. It was a gift from my best friend, who had carried it daily through three tours in Iraq. It was a relatively ugly scratched, coyote brown. Big and bulky, but it fit in my modified front pocket of my knife jeans for several years. Can only assume it caught on the seatbelt and fell out at the lake.
That knife held an edge and was just tough as s*** @ fifty below zero. It gutted, boned and skinned an elk and a whitetail in Northport, WA, when I left my butcher kit at home. It helped me escape a nasty situation involving lots of beer, an unsecured anchor rope, and fifteen feet of water. While I would love to say I heroically sliced through the rope and saved myself from a watery grave, all that happened was I floated, too drunk to notice I wasnt completely submerged while giving my right calf a couple marks to remember my lost love by.

Towards the end, she was a vague kinda yellow instead of coyote tan, grey metal streaks showing her age. I really hope whoever found her thought she was the most beautiful thing ever, because I did. Called in sick the next day and looked all day to no avail. I hope shes riding a pocket right now, waiting for some fishing line, some camp meat, or something befitting her dignity instead of rusting away in the dirt.

RIP M16. I have others like you, but they are kinda hollow shadows.
