Have you owned a Rodent 5? Opinions?

I was in the market for a day hike, back up survival knife. I do the backpack backcountry thing but also day hike fly fishing. I have multiple large blade choppers, small neckers and a few mora camp knives. I was looking for a midsize fixed blade that could put in the work. It was between the rodent 6 and rodent 5 and RMD. Weight was a small consideration....I came across a sweet R5 at a great price. I know my knives and do my research so I know this is a good purchase. What I don't see is a lot of reviews or opinions on the R5. is it underrated as it lives in the RMD's shadow? With a bit more weight it should be better as a emergency chopper.. a bit more length... not sure if im missing something.

Who's owned one, what are your opinions? With the RMD being so loved.... the R5 should be right there with it correct?

thanks

Tincan, I'd say go for it! If RMD did not exist, then R5 would probably take the spot!
Sure, it's a bit heavier, but at the same time has more blade and will accommodate bigger hands. Ergos and balance are good, same steel...
The only, and it is small one, drowback is the lack of contouring on the scales, they're still comfy, but not as comfy as they could be. That can be fixed with some sandpaper and elbow grease though, the mod should not matter that much on a user.

And the compulsory pics:

I have to agree with elof. If the RMD did not exist the R5 would be the go to for many people.

Elof...what a good looking knife....the R5s currently offerd are black on black. Is yours a SR custom shop R5?

Mine is from this year's Blade Show. I liked the color combo so I snatched it off the exchange a long while ago.
However, I had a chance to compare mine withe the standard version, and mine is somewhat thicker. I'd definitely would advise going with the standard version's thickness, for the knife this size it would work a lot better for a user.

Yes I just wanted to see if there was any contouring in thr handle like WW's r6

Dang!... :( WW's R6...
Does it matter at all that the original drop point R6 was ordered roughly a year ago, and been in MY possesion since April???

As I wrote few posts above, it doesn't have the contouring, but still is really comfy in hand, and folks with bigger paws will find them a lot better fit than RMD.

Ill give you credit bud!! I did copy Elof's drop point R6. Just added liners. But the handles seem more contoured now then before. After seeing Elof's R6 i sent my regular R6 in to be modified. And when i found out that you could get drop points I also ordered my drop point RMD. And eventually i want to order a drop point R9. But the drop point R6 is his creation and he has the original. But i do have the original drop point RMD
