A friend of mine loaned me a great magazine called Backwoodsman. It covers all kinds of outdoor activities, including hunting, hiking, boating and fishing. They have articles on handmade knives, production knives, survival skills, airguns :D , blackpowder guns, how to build your own boat, the list is too long to go on and on. Just Google Backwoodsman, and you should get to their site. The newsstands in MD just started carrying it, but the mag has been around since the late 70's. It helped to get me hooked on airguns (I'm looking for a Benjamin Sheridan).

Yes, I've read the mag. Don't have a subscription now but pick it up from time to time depending on if the articles in that issue appeal to me or not.

I'm in MD also and have seen it often in this area. Guess since it's "primitive" stuff it's PC enough for them :-)

Enjoy!

Great magazine, been reading it for about 4-5 years now. Lots of cool do-it-yourself articles for outdoorsmen. I really enjoy the reprints of articles from old outdoors manuals and magazines. If you like low cost and low tech ideas for the outdoors, this is your mag. Plus the publisher sells a nice selection of old carbon steel knives off the back page every issue.

This looks like a thread for the Wilderness & Survival Skills forum so I'll move it there ...

The Backwoodsman rules. It is the only magazine I will buy without leafing through it first to check the contents. I've never been disappointed.

I love Backwoodsman. I picked up a copy last summer and before I finished reading it I knew I was going to get a subscription. There is another magazine along the same lines geared more towards living off the grid that is pretty good too. The name escapes me right now.

I have read it for years and couple years ago I made a deal and bought every issue there is and I can say that it is the best magazine there is out there, it has tought me alot of skills that I never thought of before reading it there and putting it to use.

It is real popular in the blackpowder crowd. I have subscribed now for 4 years and to date it is the only Mag I read from cover to cover. Even made the blackpowder pistol a year ago and it works great!!!

another good magazine about self reliance and living off the grid is BackwoodsHome magazine their website is pretty good too with lots of free articles that you can read directly from their new issue. the website is http://www.backwoodshome.com/ I've read Backwoodsman before and i like it but i Cant seem to find it anywhere and as i am currently unemployed i didnt get a subscription.
