An amazing movie. There have been coming out some good war movies of late.

"The Hurt Locker" was good but this one is amazing. Almost too real for regular Joes like me

They have the Ka-bar strapped to their gear, all of them. Is it issued? I thought those men bought their own knives.

Was it a documentary? If it was a documentary and you were viewing actual troops in the field, it may very well have been a unit purchase. The nuances of equipment issued, purchased, etc in the military are too ridiculous to go into, but referring to something as issued - is often a headache inducing exercise in semantics.

arter all these yrs.d2 ka-bar with optional pocket sheath is my 1st choice for go to knife.can afford any i want, still go with ka-bar,realize busses will cut forever but i can sharpen in field.sheath pouch holds swiss army, mini-light, &small diamond hone.hard to imagine sit.you would'nt be able to endure.

So Dennis, are you saying you prefer the D2 KaBars to the 1095 Cro Van?

Marines are issued Kabars, bayonets, a certain brand of folding knife at small units, etc. The Army issues bayonets, and will procure anything the commander wants.

Hollywood is a different ball game. Advisors suggest what might be possible, prop men spice the action with exotic variations, and the cameramen play it up to entertain you. After all, you want your money's worth, and real life is dull and boring.

Very few squads keep all their gear so uniform they have a knife in the same place. It's virtually impossible to duplicate the exact load on a pistol belt when one soldier has a 28" waist and the other a 38". Real estate on it gets overloaded anyway, as the American solder (and cop, too) is issued way too much to carry into combat.

Remember seeing scenes of soldiers running off combat aircraft with fully loaded rucksacks? NO, not a real combat hot zone, just fluff for a network camera man. I don't ever expect Hollywood to get it right, either.

Having a brother who works closely with Marines, the Ka-Bar is not as ubiquitous as one would be led to believe. Additionally, many Soldiers do not carry their bayonet into combat with them. I have a buddy in the 82nd who hasn't carried one since jump school. Many in the military do not think they need anything that is not given to them, and many decide that something is just too heavy to carry around all day. My brother had to phone me and ask me to mail him a few knives, because he figured he would get issued everything he needed (bad assumption).

We didn't have K-Bars or folding knives issued when I was in the USMC, we had to buy ours. ;)
