Sorry don't know where you can find non-milsurp ones.

For day hikes I use a surplus rubberized one. Would even work for a "no frills" overnighter.

These bags look like the modern messenger bag. Timbuk2 makes alot but often are colorful. I found an all black one at REI on sale for less than $30. Well made and lined with waterproof material. A little heavy for the size.

Ask Matt at ML Knives to make you one. http://mlknives.com/

Originally a haversack was used to carry oat cakes ! Havre = oats in Norwegian.

Thank you for that info! Do you have any links/resources on that subject? A gentleman and I were discussing their actual origin (and that of the 'bread bag') a couple of months ago.

From my 1935 F&W dictionary. Haversack is a sack with a strap carried across the shoulders. Haver [oats] + sack.
Similarly Knapsack is also such a bag . Knappen [to eat in Danish] + sack
There are other food terms for foods that are carried for traveling such as 'Johnny cake'.This is a corruption of 'journey cake'.

thanks everone for the help, i found something that i think will work from the surplus store its pretty much just a map case made out of heavy cotton canvas. so what i m thinking about doing is getting some bees wax waterproofing stuff like sno seal or simailir,ad water proofing it. thanks for all the great input, thats why i love it here

When I go hunting or trapping I sometimes carry what I call a sack pack. I think our Maori folk might call them a 'pikau'.

The simplest sack pack is just an old sack with something like an acorn in each bottom corner. A rope is tied around the acorns to form the shoulder straps. The other end of the rope(s) is used to tie the bag shut and to anchor the top of the shoulder straps to the bag.

A friend made me a more elaborate one from green canvas (?). It has webbing straps. At the bottom the straps are tied to webbing loops sewn to the corner of the bags. The bag is still tied up a the top with cord that is fixed to the webbing straps.

I made my own pack using polarfleece fabric and my wife's sewing machine. Polarfleece is tough, and it is relatively quiet when it brushes past sticks etc in the bush.

Here's a picture showing the simple sack version, and the two sewn-up versions.

The knot used to tie up the top of the bag needs to be secure, as well as relatively easy to untie. I would generally take two turns of cord around the sack before I tied the knot shown below.

Best wishes.... Coote.

I'm delighted that you like these simple bags too Luckykitty. It is good to enthuse with like-minded people.

Just get an alice buttpack and a shoulder strap. Its large enough to carry the essentials, small enought to stay out of the way, waterproof, and more durable than any cloth or fabric sack.

The guy from wilderness outfitters archery / pathfinder school carries a haversack. I bet he sells them in his store.

/Oh I just saw that Raymond beat me to it.

I still think some of the best deals are found on popular auction sites. Look at some of the vintage coach bags and there are some quality finds. Real good leather and built very solid.
