I have been trying to put an edge on my Fortress Bowie for the past few hours. Man I am perplexed. This is 440A steel which isn't the greatest but for what the knife is it is more than I'll ever need. But I'll tell ya it is a bitch to get an edge on. The Fortress I rec. had a working edge from the factory but not hair poppin like I like. The clip wasn't sharp either and I have the clip sharper than the main edge! How's that for a dicotamy. I don't know if it is the length of the blade or what but I ain't havin any success. Also as a side bar here don't first sharpen the clip and then try and sharpen the main edge unless you put some good heavy taper over it. Don't ask. Anyways anyone have any ideas? thanks and keepem sharp

Doubtful I could help much, but I am a bit curious-what setup are you using to sharpen it?

Some blades, even factory edges have had the carbon cooked out of them, and you will never get a extra sharp edge from them. About the only thing you can do is once you have it as sharp as you can, make one or two passes backwards on a medium corse dimond stone. If you look at the edge with a loop the edge will have a very small, almost serrated look.

Well never heard of a high quality knife having the carbon burned out of it. Nope not raising a burr. I am sure it has something to do with the knife being so big and kind of narrow in blade width considering how long it is. It is thick too over .25". But that is the way Bagwell designed it and that is as it should be. The top clip will shave hair and cut skin pretty easily I'll say that. I'll goof with it off an on over the next few days and see if I can't get it right. keepem sharp

If you aren't raising a burr you aren't sharpening to the edge of the blade. If you aren't sharpening to the edge of the blade you can't get the sharpest edge possible.

You haven't told us much but I'm going to venture a guess anyway: I guess you have a lot of steel to grind away and it's going to take awhile. Whatever you're using, there's probably something coarser you could use....

Try either file or coarse diamond to set a whole new bevel at lower angle than the factory edge was. Then microbevel with something with finer grit.
