Having a hard time identifying this knife

No model number means pre-1966. Italic Kabar means mid-1950s. (post 1953?)

It looks like the 1207/1208/1209 (leather/wood/wood handles) knives put out from 1966 to 1978 (1208/1209) or 1980 (1207).

Thanks I got it as part of a trade. I just have not found one with the same handle yet. I do think it looks more like the 1207 you mentioned. I cannot find any with this handle. Could it be after market?

Knife is correct as from the factory, post 1952, pre-1966, I have at least three of them. Looks like a beautiful example!!

I finally found my 1962 KA-BAR catalog and price list. Your knife is shown as a model 294-6. The 2 indicates a stag handle, the 6 is the 6" blade length, and the basic model number is 94. The dealer cost in February 1962 was $59.40 per dozen. They were also available as a 594-6 with the 5 indicating a leather handle.

You're welcome!! Let us know if google gives you any more info than that, I doubt it will but would like to know if it does and what it says.

I didn't think there would be any info on the net. It wasn't until more recently that the post war knives began getting some collectability, most people had been collecting the more famous pre-war knives and few cared about the ones marked Kabar italicized. Now as time is marching on and the Kabar marked ones are getting to be near 70 years old there seems to be more interest in them although I still see myself having little interest in cheaper delrin handled folders. They still used some very nice stag in the pre-Cole years for folders and hunters and these seem to get collector interest, as do the collector club knives. Yep, a missing sheath is a sad thing and the bane of fixed blade collectors. I think every collector of antique fixed blade hunting knives owns more knives than sheaths. Sometimes I buy a ratty knife just for the sheath. A friend recently paid over 150 bucks for a nice example early KA-BAR sheath for a knife he has, I don't have those kind of funds available. I think the only way you will find the proper one for your knife is to buy a leather handle version of the correct era which go fairly cheap and put your knife in it.

I am not a collector. I got the knife as an add on in a pistol trade. I was planning on using it. I am thinking that is a Baad idea? I guess I will not use it.A shadow box might be a good place for it. Is it something someone will be looking for to fill a slot in a collection. Like I said am not a collector and would rather someone have it that was if it is that collectable.

You might let some folks here know you'd sell it. It looks like a mint example and collectors love the stag handles. It was made to be used 50-60 years ago, but to me it would be a shame to use such a fine example when a plain leather handled one would work as well and be less collectable.
