Having a word stamped into a blade?

I have a knife (GEC 85 with the Saber grind) I'd like to carry for the birth of my daughter. I'd love to have her name on it and ideally have the name stamped into the flat of the saber grind. I used to stamp mild steel with a hammer and stamp a lot back when I built custom machines but I have never attempted hardened steel (1095 at about 58 RC) and I also worry about bending or shattering the blade.

Could I send this out to be done? Any recommendations? Also if I have go a more traditional route with an etch or laser engraveing are there any recommendations for a good place to get that done?

This is an example of the blade:

I'm no expert but I don't think striking a hardened blade is a great idea, I would expect it to snap.
But look into electro chemical etching you can get a good deep etch and not risk the blade breaking.
I'm sure someone with more experience will chimin soon maybe I'm wrong.

I would recommend etching, rather than stamping a hardened blade.

For my dad's retirement, we did laser engraving.

My local jeweler offered the service, and it looks great.

In my opinion, 58 RC is in the pretty hard range. I personally wouldn't try stamping. Not only might there be a chance of causing a chip or fracture, but even if it were possible to stamp the blade, I doubt that the stamp would be very clear or look very good.

I think having the blade etched or engraved by a professional with a lot of experience would produce the best, and best looking results.

One concern I would have with etching or engraving a carbon steel blade is, if you are going to carry it, rust might develop in the lettering and be difficult to remove.

Just a thought, but another option might be to have a piece of metal engraved and then inlaid into the handle secured with epoxy.

Thanks guys, I think I'll go with an engraving or etching. Any recommendations on where I should send it?

Call local jewelers or trophy shops. You either need a diamond drag pantograph machine or a fiber laser.
If you can't find either, contact me.

Look up tarheelstatefirearms.com. They're local to me and do laser engraving. They can do all kinds of different designs and they're real good people. PM me if you want more info
