Having trouble etching

I am trying to etch my blades with a stencil from Ernie. I am using a Carquest battery charger (model cq-80cr) as a power supply. It isn't working.

I don't think there is any electrical flow. I am clipping the red clip to the blade and using a metal stamp for the etch. When I try it, there is no activity and the display just blinks 8.

The charger works when I hook it to a battery. Is there a shut of mechanism preventing the electricity from flowing when not hooked to a battery? I can't figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your help!

Dave

If it's a new "smart" battery charger, it won't output power unless there is a battery in the system. Even an old dead battery would work to fool it.
Other than that you could find an older (or very cheap) battery charger that doesn't have the smart system.

Not that I know of other than having a battery in the system... Simpler really is better at times

To be honest I'm not sure... I know a bit about issues with battery chargers from other projects, but I've always just used a personalizer plus for my etching
It sounds like it might be a bit hot though, but I'd have to see what mine actually outputs

I read about a bypass for the new chargers. I'll see if I can find it.

This is one example of a guy doing it.
I didn't mess with that. An old cell phone charger and a few other parts does the trick just fine for me.

Until I stop being so cheap and buy a personalizer.
