Hi, I've read and viewed numerous reviews about the Spyderco Southard Flipper. For some reason, I'm still not able to pull the trigger and get the knife. I think it's in no small part to the price ($275+). Should I wait for a POSSIBLE price drop or will there even be one? Maybe even a possible price increase?

Someone compared it to the new Benchmade 300. They mentioned that the 300 was so much cheaper. Check it out.

Thanks, I just pre-ordered the BM 300SN for a fraction (almost half) of what the Spyderco is going for. I'll probably still get the Southard but probably somewhere down the line. Thanks again.

Having both, I can see where a number of people will prefer the southard to the 561. Regardless of price difference.

Honestly, the southard is a $300.00 knife all day long. i also think a large sebenza is a $400.00 knife if that helps. The knife is great, and I would have no reservations paying what people are asking right now at retail.

I agree with the current pricing, being that it's new to the Spyderco lineup and their first flipper.

But I have no doubts that down the road it'll be less expensive...not by much though.

DAMNIT! See what happens? Now I've gone and purchased BOTH the Benchmade 300SN AND the Spyderco Southard Flipper. I'm going to take a long needed break now. I'll be back on the forums in about a month if I can stay away. Till then, take care . . .

I picked up a BM300 without hesitation because I've always wanted an Axis flipper and the price point was so "comfortable". For myself, the Southard price point will require a hands on first before purchase which may be awhile as I'm sure they're all going to be snatched up quickly. Maybe, by then, Spyderco will have some cool and irresistible version out.

I delayed pulling the trigger on the Southard and now everywhere looks to be sold out!

Can you explain why? I have 561 and cannot imagine how southard can be better.

It may be due to the size. The 0561 is indeed a great knife but quite a bit bigger than an Southard for EDC.

The BM 300 doesn't look like it has enough detent strength to build up enough energy for proper deployment without wrist flicking; a downside for some. Also no titanium slabs/liners if that matters to you. The Southard is worth the $230-$300 most places are asking for. The quality, heft, and solidness took me by surprise.

The only weakness that I see in the Southard is the clip design. Aesthetically, it could have been designed better - preferably with titanium. In addition, the tip of the clip should have been angled slightly higher so as to avoid snagging on clothing when trying to clip into the pocket. Furthermore, it has slight yawing movement along the scales when medium pressure is applied. (like the wholes were made too big for the screws that secure it to the titanium slab).

It's pretty much 6 of one half a dozen of the other and size is the biggest factor but the Southard does have some advantages such as better blade steel, a ti liner on the G10 side versus the steel liner on the ZT, and arguably better fit and finish. Every single example I've seen pics or videos of in addition to my own has absolutely flawless fit and finish all the way down to the lock up being almost exactly in the same spot on every one. The consistency is astounding. I honestly don't think I've heard of a single person claiming any problems what-so-ever with the Southard. It really is an absolutely game changing knife in terms of the quality it exudes. It's really on the same level in my opinion as any CRK I've ever handled and from the sounds of it, I'm not the only one who feels that way.
