Having trouble with a display case

My dad has given me a nice display case for Christmas.
It seems to be made of oak and has a foam insert covered
with red velvet. The problem is that there is not enough
space between the glass and the foam to put the knives.
The foam is very stiff and does not yeild easily.
Small knives will fit but when I close the glass on them I
get the uneasy feeling that too much pressure is being put
on the glass. I am thinking that this case must be intended
for coins or metals. I have considered both cutting slots
to fit each knife exactly or trying to reduce the height of
the foam. Cutting slots would probably look messy and
reducing the height would probably not allow secure holding
of larger knives.
Have any of you already delt with this problem?
Would like to hear any suggestions or ideas.

Thanks, -Rebus

I have never owned such a case. Im very interested in learning what you do to fix the problem...

Off hand, I would say that all the foam has got to go...I think you may need to just carefully rip all that stuff out, then get new foam and cut to fit, and then spray it with glue and lay some type of felt on top....

From what you have said, you sure dont want to crack the glass, I think you would want none of the knives to hit the glass when you are done.

If you can take out the foam, try fillet it. ;)

Make it just a little thicker than your fattest knife.

Do you plan on mounting this case on the wall? If so, you may need that extra foam to hold the knives in place. I didn't like the idea of the knives pressed up against the glass either so I bought some fancy half round molding, cut 2 pieces to length and next step will be to drill holes in the molding for some dowel pegs to hold approximately 12 Buck 110's when mounted on the wall. The thin blue foam will be replaced behind the half round molding as the background color. This has been one of those little projects that has been sitting on the back burner for weeks! :(

In the past I cut channells (or slots) out the foam a little with a razor blade (just a v cut for each knife with the width a little bigger than the knife itself.) I have done that for bigger knives in that type of case and it comes out looking fine. Just a little removal will take most of the pressure off and the knife will stay in place if you choose to hang the case. Another thing might be to replace that thin layer of red foam with something nicer and more inert. Ultra suede or quality felt fits the bill pretty well.

I while back here on the forum there was a guy who wanted to make a display case for a restaurant.

He ended up with a display case that would be hung on the wall. He kept the knives from falling out of position by fixing magnets underneath the felt.

I think what we all think is the greatest concern is, "Dont break the glass"

so be carefull, because if you break the glass,,,well....then you got a REAL project ....
