I and the wife are planning a trip to waikiki soon and would like some help on finding some local shopping spots for knives, books.Any help please

Hehe.

I only know of 2 or 3 knife spots. There is Power Edge (airsoft/knife), you can search their name, Klesk gave the adress before. And there is Young Guns (knife/gun  ), they're at Pa'a street in Mapunapuna, near the Toyota dealer.

Power Edge probably has a better selection (have some higher end stuff) and customer service (I was there once for 10 min, asked if I needed help 3 times). However, it is a airsoft shop as well so there was a bunch of kids when I went there. I thought that was just a little strange. Maybe I'm crazy. Oh ya, you have to park in some private lot, at walk a bit.

Young Guns: Good people, some good prices, decent selection. Parking sucks. But I like them the best.

Waikele, Ala Moana, Pearl Ridge, Windward Mall, Ward, Waikiki shops. Thats all the bigger malls I know of. Ward and Waikele has Boarders.

As Mr. Underaged! mentioned above, there is Young Guns and Power Edge. Power Edge probably has a better selection, they also have some Surefire stuff and a bunch of Airsoft. The only other place I go to buy knives is at the Stadium Swap Meet, you probably want to go there anyway. There is a knife booth run by a guy named Chin (forgot his last name), he has really good prices, and he is a knife guy and practioner, so he knows his stuff. Let me know if you want explicit directions to the booth, if not, you can just wander around, you will see it eventually. Just be aware that the swap meet is in the parking lot of Aloha Stadium, if you come here in the summer, it is unbearably hot by 10:00 AM or so. Go early, bring water, use a lot of sunscreen, wear a hat.

If you are looking for regular bookstores, we have a couple of Borders stores and a Barnes and Noble. If you are looking for Hawaiiana, or any rare or hard to find Hawaiian books, the yellow pages is your best bet, there are a bunch of places that sell old books and antiques/collectibles.

Feel free to e-mail me if you want more information.

Tom Mayo is on the North Shore of Oahu. Also Ken Onion and a fair amount of other knifemakers also reside here. Underaged and Klesk have pretty much covered the bases for knife shopping on Oahu. Power Edge has probably the widest selection with Young Guns and then Chin (Swap Meet) pulling up the rear. The swap meet is great for bringing back Hawaii gifts to anyone back home, but you definitely want to heed Klesk's advice about the water, sunscreen, etc. There is a lot of walking around and it will be hot. Swap meets occur on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday morning to early afternoon. I haven't been there on a Wednesday in awhile, but I think if you're only going to pick one day then the weekend is better. Water will cost a fortune if you don't bring your own.

If you're going to be in Waikiki then you may want to check out the International Marketplace if it's still there--right across from the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

That's pretty much all I can think of...hope you enjoy your stay.

Will you be going off island? There used to be a older shop tucked away in Hilo town. Kaya's? Is it still there?
Lokelani

Apparently. Kaya's

Does anyone else know of thie place? What's it like. I hope to go visit my grandma over there soon...

Oh, Chad (Daywalker @spyderco.com's forums) might know about this place.

Last time I was in Hilo, maybe 2 years ago, Kaya's was still there. It's a small shop, full of junk all over like any stereotypical old-style mom 'n pop shop. I thought I might find some treasures, some long discontinued knives that are now collectible, but it was not to be. Who knows, though, some of the Gerbers I saw might now be hard or harder to find, might be worth a look, there's nothing to do in Hilo anyway.

What!?

Eat. Fish. But uhhh ya not much else. Farmers market had some pretty interesting stuff. When I went they had all kinds of carnivorous(sp) plants.

I remember a good fishing supply shop there. I kind of remember were it is but I don't remember the name. It was a Japanese name beginning with T. This should be a fun game... :)

the owner (Kaya i guess) has a LOT of really cool collectible knives from way back.......Loveless' and lots more..........however, the value of them has forced him to take them all home and put them in a safe.......... :(
