Whats the advantage / disadvantage of this blade shape. I seen one I really liked, but also wondered if it whould be difficult to resharpen. Well any insight into this type of blade would be greatly appreciated.

The hawk, or hawksbill blade, is a descendent of the sickle. It was originally an agricultural tool, designed to gather the stalks to be cut in the inward curve of the blade. A straight or bellied blade slashed against stalks would just push them away, unless the blade was very sharp or vigorously chopped against them.

For clearing weeds or cutting rope, it still works well. For slicing fibrous or coarse materials, it may also be the best choice. Recurved blades are simply hawksbills that turn up again at the tip, giving the benefits of both.

Resharpening can be tricky if you use a stone, but a rod or a ceramic v-sharpener will do them as easily as any other blade.
