Decided to check out my heat treatment on the Hawk that got left in the oven for 6 hrs.I'm pretty happy with the results. I think it performed well for 1080. I'm going to regrind the edge and temper again 25 degrees higher temp at 425 by my oven. The edge chipped on the last test but only on the first blow. I hit the bone at a very bad angle. I finished chopping it up and had little damage on the center of the blade.

Mark, looks like you need to go to wal-mart, those blue jeans won't be to warm this winter :D .

Cool testing on the hawk, 1080 is good stuff. I temper my hawks a little higher, usually around 450, as a tool that takes a lot of abuse, I would rather have them dull a little quicker then to chip and have pieces come off. I've had that happen with hammers before and flying steel can be pretty dangerous.

Nice Job

We must all have beards here!!!!

Nice test Mark. I HT'ed mine a little harder than you. I treated it like 5160 and cooked it at 350. The spike is also draw tempered at about 700 deg F for a good spring consistency. I use PVC to test them for chipping (Knives and swords too) I have a dummy named Deputy Dandridge that has PVC bones. (I don't like him in case you missed that clue).

Anyway, I don't have any chipping yet so I think I will leave it until I do. It's easier to make it softer than harder.

Bill, Those are my best jeans, You should see what I wear when I'm doing real work :D . I'll probably end up at 450 draw, just want to step it up 25 degrees at the time just for my own referance.

Yep Peter I usually keep a short gotee and stash till the end of August. I can grow a 6" beard in 6 months but cant grow any on the top of my head. I tell everybody that my hair has just migrated. used to have a full head of hair and a smooth body when I was 18. Now i'm just the opposite. Aint life grand.

Good review, looks like you've got a good thing going there.

However, it's going to take a lot more testing to get that stump out of your front yard. ;)
