Good morning all, over night I sat and watched the videos on making a hawk from Steve Wiley. Great job Thank you for your time and effort Mr. Wiley I am looking forward to trying it my self.

I have some bar stock to work up a teardrop drift with and was wondering about the finished size of the drift. I am guessing that the largest dimension across the teardrop is a little over 1" maybe up to 1 1/2". Could one of you that has experience with hawks confirm this or if I am way off let me know?
Thanks Bob

If you want to make your own drift, your best bet would be to by a pre-made ash or hickory handle from Crazy Crow and use it as a model.

Every now and then, I have seen drifts on E*bay for sale, may be easier and cheaper, and faster than making one, not that there is anything wrong with that,

Dunlap wood crafts is the best place I have found to buy hafts..Good quaility and standard fit as well. Be careful with the drifts from Ebay, balcksmith depot etc..They are 60/40 ductile iron and wont stand up to much abuse. Drift the eye out with something else close to the right size and the true the eye up with the iron drift. Or better yet buy one or make one from something like 1045 or 4140 if your going to slit and drift a lot. If you use somethign else to help size the eye the iron drift will last you a while or if you do the "traditional" contruction of wrapping and welding you can just use the drift to true up the eye that way as well. A long time ago when before I knew any better I tried using a iron drift to completely make the eye..It developed long deep cracks after about three smacks :jerkit:

I've made a drift out of a an old bolt that was once used to attatch rail road rails to eachother. Its about the right size, with "step" that holds one end in place like a lag bolt that I ground down to help bevel the eye. Its pretty tuff steel and works good so far.

An old pipe wrench handle will make an outstanding drift as you will soon see in an upcoming video, the drift i used to bump the blade back in the WIP is an old 24 inch Rigid :eek:the older you get the smarter you work or maybe i'm just getting tired and lazy:D
