I just got the little hawk hafted, the knife is one I finished up yesterday. The hawk head is 4" and the haft is 6" made from not so curley curley maple. The knife has a 6 1/4" blade forged from a leaf spring. Overall its 10 1/2". Wrought iron and a piece of deer or elk stag make up the rest. As far as head/handle relation goes for the hawk it looks a little off to me. The eye is either to big or the haft is to short. Let me know what you think. I think the size of the eye is the culpret.

rehaft the hawk and add a bit of flare to the butt end. That should visually balance the bigger eye.

Hey Higgy, You were suppossed to say it looked perfect. I think I can resize this haft and use on one of the others. Thanks!

Im with Higgy...make the haft longer. Your work is great Ray...it has a really good antique look about it. Im trying to get just half as good as you...

Howdy Ray!! I agree... the hawk looks unbalanced. The size of the haft top overwhelms the head to my eye. That visually thick haft running perpendicularly into the (relatively) thin line of the eye side seems to "stop" the line of the haft rather abruptly. The straight sides on the rather fast outward taper of the haft serve to emphasize the thickness of the top. How about if you relieve the upper part of the haft with a bit of a curve, like the digitally modded picture below? Sort of fair the line of a thinner lower haft into the upper (wider) part. Just a thought, amigo.

I think part of my queasy feeling while viewing the hawk is trying to imagine how I'd keep it from flying out of my hand in use. Methinks I'm looking for the flair Higgy mentioned or a curled-back butt or other some-such at the butt of the haft to anchor the hand in use (as well as visually balance the visual mass of the top of the haft).

On the other hand, the knife is looking mighty fine!! :D:thumbup:

Rok, What did you do to my little hawk? I'm going to double the length this time. Hope it goes as well as the first try. These little hafts are a pain in the ass to get right. Lots of guessing on my part.

I know you asked about the Hawk, but just wanted to say I really like the knife.
