I'm forging some larger hawks this week. They are around 25 oz.

One is a spike poll and one is a hammer poll but I am considering making one that will take threaded inserts so I can fit it with different sizes and shapes. I could have a tree step spike, Indian fighting spike, wood dowel driving hammer, nail driving hammer, beer bottle opener...etc, etc.

Anyone ever try this and if so how did it work out?

Peter, no I never tried it but, I gotta say you are one creative fella. Some of the stuff you come up with makes me nod my head and say...that makes sense. Cool idea.

Peter I've throught about that myself, would be quite unique, I would only suggest you leave the poll area pretty thick and drill and tap it at least using a 3/8" tap with a good 3/8"-1/2" long treaded area, especially on the spike poll, you know that ones going to get a bunch of hanging and pulling sideways pressure. Can't wait to see them.

That's why I decided to do it on the heavy hawks, Bill. I may be going for too stout but I was concerned about the stress also and since I had the meat to play with back there I left the poll at 3/4" round. I am going to make the inserts 1/2" thread with a slight shoulder to take the strain off the threads.

This one has worked me. That heavy stuff just doesn't want to move like I want it to.
