I have always heard folks say that if you plan to do alot, or even a little hammering (tent stakes, batoning etc.) with the back of your hawk that you need to have a hawk with a hardened pole; This is due to the eye being soft and more apt to deform or crack under the added stress of the hammering. My question is this, If you harden the pole isnt the eye still soft? and if so, why is it any more apt to not crack with a hardened pole vs one that isnt?

Same reason using the bit doesn't deform the eye:

You have the hardened surface taking the onset of the impact, the steel behind the surface which is softer absorbing the shock, and only then do you get to the eye.

Hammering wooden stakes, I'd not worry about the eye, except hammering with a round surface may well leave you with a sore wrist on the other hand. . .;)

I guess i just figured the bit would spread the forece of the impack sort of like how an arch distributes weight... Thanks for answering that for me.
