Does anyone know if the Rogers Ranger Spike hawk has a convex edge or a V grind? How about the Vietnam hawk? Thought I would touch up the edges on both and not getting the results I think I should. On the Rogers Ranger spike, I can raise a burr on each side, but when I knock it off, it always seems like it feels sharp from one side of the edge but not the other. To some extent I have the same thing happen on the Vietnam hawk.

For example you run your thumb left to right across the blade it seems sharp. Run your thumb right to left instead and it lacks edge bite. I was using the Syderco 204 in bench stone mode, but I am not sure that works as well as first it seemed. I wonder if the stones sit even. But that still would not explain all my problems. That's why I wondered if they had a convex edge, as I might not really have it ground off yet. The blades are also curved, making it a little harder to hold the edge even free hand. With a loupe it looks like I got the edge ok, and the magic marker on the blade gets taken off right at the edge. But when I knock all the burr off by stropping on cardboard, I just cant seem to get it to take a nice sharp edge. All suggestions welcome.

Mike,

Get a fine ceramic rod (not flat hone) to finish the edge. Use a stropping motion on both sides, and gradually make it lighter (this is after the work you've done with the other tools). It should push it to shaving sharp, and remove the burr nicely. It worked very well for us in the woods.

Hope this helps!

Problem solved, All basic mistakes, its just new blade shapes and techniques that work best need to be learned with a new type of toy. Both the Vietnam and RR Spike now have just the exact edges I was looking for.
