I have a CS Riflemans Hawk that I like but the edge that came on it was awful unlike the one on my Trail Hawk that came fairly decent. Is it OK to just use a file to sharpen a hawk or do you guys do something different? I have no wheel or anything like that. What do you guys use to sharpen a user hawk.

Depends on how sharp you want it.

A file used in moderation would put a decent 'work edge' on it. So would a coarse stone like you'd use on a lawnmower blade.

If you are operating in the real world, just use a nice, sharp mill bastard file on it. That's all you need. On the other hand, if you think it needs to be "scary sharp" or "shaving sharp" or "hair popping sharp" use the stone of your choice after the file.

Axes sharpen like knives. Use stones or equivalents abrasive (eg: files, sandpaper...) going from large grains to thinner granulometries until you reach the sharpness that suit your needs.
For axes I generally try to put an edge that cuts typing paper without tearing, works well enough for me.

I go the mill bastard route, followed by some 220 to 320 grit paper glued (spray ahdesive) to leather, which is glued to a wood block. Then I finish up with finer papers (600-1000) on a mousepad and then the strop. I end up with a nice convex edge. Very true, however, that for practical use you could stop with the file, once you get the bevel angles and edge where you want them.
