I want to make a leather sheath for my new Hawk and was wondering what you guys would make for it? Here's the hawk:

I've been making knife sheaths off and on for a while now but never done anything for a hatchet or hawk and want some help. Have not desided on anything yet. I guess I'm just looking for pictures and ideas for now. Thanks,

Heber

I like that combo! And I betcha you will get some good input here. I vote for an old west themed cover with lots of fringe and some horse hair and tin. :)

Glad your here Heber!

Only one way to do it....you gotta make a scabbard for the rifle, holster for the 6-shooter, and same for the hawk.....all matching with Sheridan tooling...it's the only way to go....so get to work!!:D

BINGO! You've got your direction Heber! Now, Git er Done and post pics tomorrow! :D

It's tomorrow and I actually have some pictures. :) I just sat down with some leather and my hawk and started drawing, then cutting, then drawing and cutting and fitting and cutting again. Then I desided to try some stamping tools a friend gave me a few years ago. I like how that turned out. Am ready to stain the sheath, then glue and drill it. So here is what I came up with:

What do you guys think so far?

So far so good! :D

I think you poached your wife's cutting board for your leather projects... just like I did!

Seriously, it's looking good. Can't wait to see it complete.

You did the same thing slim? ;) I inherit all the old cutting boards. Those plastic ones are the best so far. I've worn out three so far in the last couple of years.

No swipping from the wife, I'm single. I turned one of my two cutting boards into my "craft board" when I lived with my brother and his family.

Glad you guys like the sheath so far. It's been fun working on it. Got it stained with some 4 year old Tandy Mahogany stain after taking the pictures. Unforunantly I had left the stain in the sun a few summers ago and now it looks like a dirty light tan. Guess it gives the sheath a real rustic look. LOL!! I need to get a ride into town to borrow my brothers drill press. I need to drill and stitch the sheath then finish up the edges.

I got my brothers drill press yesterday afternoon and was finally able to stick up the sheath today. All that needs to be done is attach the snaps and Rivet the belt loops into place. Will be heading to BigLots in a bit to get some more drill bits cause I don't have anything big enough right at the moment.

I really like how the front of the sheath turned out but the back is hidious! LOL Some how the holes in the back didn't line up quite right. Am thinking I cut off to much leather. But it seems to be stong so I'll just keep it for my self. ;) What do you guys think of my first Hawk sheath? I'll post more pictures this afternoon when I finish it. Time for lunch!

Heber

Here are the pictures of the finished sheath I promised. Hope you guys like it. Questions, comments, and recommendations are all welcome!

Thanks for looking,

Heber

Looking good to me, nice and solid. :)

Nice work! Will it pop out of the sheath if you fell and hit the bottom of the hawk handle? Did not appear to have any stitching across the top. I know that gravity will hold it in place when on your belt. I usually just stick my hawk in my sash with a cover over the blade only when I carry at blackpowder events. Regards, Loosearrow

I guess it could if the handle was hit hard enough. Hopefully I'll never find out. Though if it does become an issue I can always add a retaining strap up top to prevent it. :) Thanks for asking,
