Prior to the arrival of our ice storm here in Ga I started on a afternoon excursion. The Slushy snow on the leaves was quite slick so I grabbed this True Temper "kids" spade along as a walking stick. Worked great-perfect for adding steps on the creek banks, chopping, and traction. The hawk still was used to clear a few branches here and there.

Now I'm thinking- I wonder if there are any quality long handled light weight shovels out there suited for this activity. . .

I used to have a kid's spade like that. I had it attached to a short chunk of broom handle and the broom handle slipped into an aluminum crutch handle. I called my 'superintendents shovel'. Useless to dig with but great for leaning on with that pad under my armpit. :D My crew nicknamed it 'Spanky' and claimed I used it to keep my subcontractors in line.

On the serious side, I think you could make a long handled shovel out of an old Ames WWII army shovel. Pretty good steel in those. They'll take an edge.
