Recently a friend has asked me to make him a tomahawk in a similar style to the cold steel trench hawk and I'm having trouble deciding what steel to use, this will be a relatively hard use tool so i was thinking something along the lines of 1085 or maybe D-2? anyway i would like some advice as to what what steel i should use and where I can get it online (i will be needing about a 10''x8'' sheet 1/4'' thick) so please help!\

Thanks, TheDandyLion

1095 is a good option , depends on your friends requirements , 01 or 02 would be good the latter I believe offering more resistance to rust etc .
The leaf spring steels also are very good but need care my khukuri rusts in the drawer when not in use , I'm on the other side of the world though better waiting for others to recommend steel suppliers.
Though there is a resource trade section in forum section ATB ;).

Edit scratch the tool steels I didn't see tomahawk 5160 is good for those .

I would opt. for the D2 personally, but that is just me after using Knives of Alaska in D2 and becoming such a fan of the steel that when I see it on a blade I just put a plus by that spec. I buy from Aldo at NewJersey Steel Baron. I did see some D2 steel for sale on this forum just yesterday on the knifemakers material for sale sub forum. I just do not have much experience with 1085.
