any recommendations help

i would really like a blunt tip, and full serrations. having said that this is what i have found:

Emerson SARK
Spyderco Spyderhawk
Byrd Hawkbill

would grinding down the tips on the latter two void the warranty so that i could not send them in for sharpening?

is there anyone who could put full serrations on the Emerson? would that void the warranty as well?

or are there any other hawkbill options out there?

what is your opinion on these knives, and the hawkbill for an emt option in general?

Appreciative,
XM

all of those mods will void the warranty. buy a set of croc sticks to touch them up yourself and save some green on shipping and the wait to come back.

they are all great choices, but why hawkbill blades? a sheepsfoot rescue knife is something far more useful to an EMT I would imagine.

these are the most common that come up when talking about rescue blades

thats why i also plan on getting the bm triage :D

the design of the hawkbill with full serrations seems to me like it would zip through clothing and fibrous material with incredible speed. and with the recurve and blunt tip i can rest assured that no one would get sliced.

the other day while doing practicals i whipped open my Skyline and even that felt too dangerous to use in close quarters around the patient. and that was in a controlled classroom setting.

ah alrighty in that case, the hunt is afoot, on a side note, there arent a lot of makers who do full serrations besides Spyderco.

Spyderco:

ColdSteel, these would have to be reground but the warranty is so terrible it wouldnt really make any difference.

5.11, not serrated:

i think i dig that tasman. especially at the price point. thanks for the help brets-ftw! anyone have any thoughts on how to go about blunting the tip? it will be a user so fit and finish is not terribly important, but i dont want it looking hideous.

When I worked for as an EMT, we were never allowed to use a knife to remove clothing. If we were caught, it was automatic termination. Reasons being is that A) a patient in the gurney might start thrashing around and would more than likely get injured, next thing you know there is a live knife in the truck on the floor B) some people get very uncomfortable at the sight of a knife, especially if they are in shock or have some trauma associated with a stabbing/penetrating wound. Whipping out a knife makes things worse, and C) Trauma Shears are cheap, strong, and do just about everything and are much safer for everyone.

I did carry a knife for use in other circumstances, but never near a patient especially not in a moving vehicle going 40-50 miles an hour while dodging traffic and hitting the occassional pothole.

Benchmade and ZT have "shroud cutters", now that would be a useful thing to have in your kit.

those are all MSRP so take about a 1/3 of the price off and that would be street value (this is my equation and in no way set in stone)

as for the tip, well there is a section under the knifemakers subforum that will be glad to help.

Of course having done a few mods myself I'd be glad to. PM/Email me if your interested.
