Hawks as woods tools?

Hi folks-

I'm not around this part of the forum terribly often, I usually reside in the W&SS area. But I thought I'd go to the source on a quick question.

The CS Trail Hawk caught my eye in a few of these recent threads, and the weight and simplicity give a lot of appeal towards hauling it into the woods. I've got a Fiskars hatchet that I love dearly, and just picked up a KaBar heavy bowie. These things are of course for general camp tasks and gathering up wood, and perform those jobs pretty well.

My question is, how well have you folks found a hawk to work as a woods tool? I understand their (primary?) role as a defensive tool, but I carry other tools for that task. If I got one, it would be solely for the previously mentioned camp tasks.

Do they chop well enough to keep them as choppers? Useful for what you consider 'camp duties'?

Thanks much for any thoughts you have-

I think of the Frontier Hawk as a thrower/weapon...
The Trail Hawk does more suited to me as a 'trail' piece (duh) and a field/camp tool (hammer poll)...

I fixed-up a Trail Hawk and really like it. I have only had it on one camping trip but have used it around the yard and fire pit quite a lot. I was amazed at the chopping power of this little hawk due to the 18" handle. My neighbor has the Frontier and it is a beast. I really enjoyed tinkering with this and pair it with Green River Hunting knife.

My first hawk was a spiked K5. A bit heavy, but a nice hawk and I still have it. Then it stuck me... ;) ...a spike seems useless as anything other than a combat weapon or escape tool...but a poll...ahhh....a poll is a hammer and a hammer is quite a useful tool. So I will only use poll hawks. My $.02...YMMV, eh?

I have the CS Trail Hawk. It is large and heavy and the head gets a little (a lot, actually) loose, but otherwise works fine as intended. It is not so quick in the hand like I thought it would be. I did have to work on the edge a little bit, convexing it out a bit and polishing it up. OOps sorry it's the Rifleman's Hawk I've got.

i have never tried the trailhawk but i have tried the frontier hawk. i think it is inexpensive enough to get one and play with. they will need some serious edge work out of the box so don't expect it to be cold steel sharp.

Thanks, folks. I may have to wait until I get a chance to handle one in person before deciding if it will fit my needs.

I figured that there would be some edge work to be done out of the box, given the price.
