I went to this co-op that caters to the horsey set . I wanted to get some saddle soap to clean a smooth veg tanned leather possibles bag . I ended up with what looks like a big bar of glycerine soap to me . They told me that is what they used as the tinned product was no longer available .

I,m used to the stuff that comes in what looks like a big shoe polish or dubbin tin . Kind of a creamy tan color . This glycerine stuff didn,t do much of a job . It didn,t lather up as well as the original product . The leather didn,t get all that clean either . Do any of you guys use saddle soap and is there another product that is readily available to replace this so-so replacement ?

Hi Kevin:

Yes, the glycerin stuff is popular.

But, good old saddle soap is available all over. I bought a can in the supermarket a week ago in the shoe polish section.

Dijos I,ll check that stuff out .

Steve the soap isn,t that available . At least not in this big city . Not that many saddles I guess . L:O:L I betcha old Wal-mart might have some . I don,t know why that glycerine soap is so popular. It doesn,t seem to do as good a job .

Tell you what Steve . Let me make a concerted effort up my way first . I asked one guy who thought I was loony for asking . (Like saddle soap can only be used on saddles .) I figured if a place that catered to horses didn,t have it that it might be less popular now .

I still have a bit of the glycerine . I used it five minutes ago to clean up my boots a bit . I think one of the differences is the thick lather produced by the saddle soap . I think it helps to emulsify the dirt .Give me a week or two to delve into the horsey crowd up here . I might even ask the Caleche drivers .(sight seeing horse carriages)

I asked my sister and here's her reply. Hope it helps

He could go to a feed/tack/saddle shop that sells horse supplies and find
what he's looking for. Or go to Petsmart and go to the horse section, they
have several to choose from. I use the best, still only $25 for a whole
kit: http://www.aussiesaddle.com/maintenance_for_sale.htm -- It's the
"Regular Maintenance Kit" and has soap, oil, and conditioner.

Tedwca the place I went to is about as close to that kind of store I will get around here . I can get anything from lassos to bridles . That kit you mentioned seems great .

I second the vote for Lexol. I've used that for years -- and watched folks try other products that didn't work nearly so well. The only problem is that I've learned not to loan it out because I don't get it back!
