Good Afternoon
I have just finished a Kitchen Knife made out of 01 hand sanded to 800 and then buffed it. have a light haze on it. So I used Flitz Compound and then Renaissance wax. I hand buffed the compounds off with a soft Golf Towel. It still has a light haze on the blade. What am I doing wrong? Still looks ok be it is bugging me.
Thanks in advance
Eddie

What kind of compound and wheels are you using? I find that if I go to the finer compounds first sometimes I get a haze. I have very limited experience with this, maybe someone with more buffing knowledge can help out.

Is the haze something on the steel (would come off with acetone etc) or the actual finish of the steel?

My buff progression is black, green, white and pink.

I have a Buffer from Harbor Freight and the Canvas like cotton wheels. I use Black and Green

What heat treatment did you use on the 01?

Fred

You need to finish buff with the white or pink.

Yeah, that's what I figure. You'll need separate buffs for each compound, plastic bags to store them in, and a buff rake.

Nathan will you be headed to the race this weekend

Oh no, I'll be safely sequestered in my shop for the duration...

I just got my kiln back. So i had heated the metal with Charcoal and Fan to get it Not Magnetic and then quenched in Olive oil then in toasted oven at 450 twice for a hour.

O1 needs a good 15 min soak at a bit more than non magnetic. Treated like this, you'd get better performance out of 1084.

It was in the coals for a good soak. I knew to leave it for a while. I will be using a kiln from now on, If I can get the controller figured out.
Thsanks
