I'm looking into an HD video camera and I'm having a hard time discerning what I should get. I plan on doing some 'action' type shots ( strapping it to the underside of my truck to watch suspension parts while we abuse the truck ), so a tough camera is a must. I've heard a lot on GoPro and Drift, but what are your recommendations for a good action camera? I know of GoPro, Drift, Contour, and Pivothead. What do you use and why?

I use a GoPro Hero 2 mainly for snowboarding and biking. I like it because it is waterproof and has a sturdy mount. I have seen them mounted to airplane wings, mountain bikes, motorcycles, surfboards, etc. and always produce high quality video.

A friend of mine just went whole hog on the GoPro Hero2 also. I checked out the website when he bought it. They have a lot of cool demo videos there. He says it's smaller than he expected, but that's a good thing.

also consider "Coutour" cameras. If you get one, post a review I'd be interested to see how these things perform + specs.

i have been using a gopro for two years and when they work they are awesome. Get the warranty though cuz your're gonna need it. First camera lasted three months, took it back, got a new one. That one lasted nine months before it broke, got a new Gopro 2, all under warranty. When it works it is simply awesome. i use the chest, head, tripod, helmet and boogie board mounts, they all work great. The wide angle and waterproof housing can't be beat.

I use the camera for my hiking videos and podcast at Anthony's Audio Journal

Get the warranty, you're gonna need it. Its a great camera though.

Good luck

Go for the Contour. We chose to stock them over GoPro when looking at both companies a year ago for several reasons (I'm not familiar with the current crop of GoPros, so some of these might not be advantages anymore):

1. Aiming lasers - You'll actually know what you are shooting.
2. Available software - You can use your iPhone or Android to change settings and set up shots.
3. Easy controls - There is a huge switch on top that is really easy to activate to start shooting underwater, with gloves, while moving, etc.
4. Shooting indicator LEDS - There are LEDs on the front and back of the camera that will show you whether or not you are currently recoding. Combined with #3, you won't have the typical first shot of your face to see if the camera is on that you see in most GoPro videos.
5. Rotating lens - You can rotate the lens without moving the rest of the body to give you more shooting options.
6. Available mounts - The available mounts are crazy. They even have Picatinny and bow mounts now. We sold a Contour with a Picatinny to the guy that made Barrett's marketing videos, which allowed for some awesome shots.
7. Looks - I know this is superficial and silly, but the Countours flat out look cooler. The GoPros always looked goofy to me.

I've personally owned and used the 1080p, Plus and Roam. The Roam is the one to get if you are on a Budget. If you have the cash, the Plus has some awesome features (HDMI out, external mic port, glass lens, etc.) and the upcoming upgraded model sounds even better.

do any of these camera have continuous looping?

that is, do any cameras that are outdoorsy, like, tough and/or waterproof, have looping so that it writes over old memory as memory expires?

I would like to get one of these cameras for use as a cycling video, to protect myself while cycling (boston drivers are brutal!). same to go for a car-dash mount.

also battery runtime is a plus. why don't any of these companies make cameras that run off a rechargeable RCR123a battery i wonder? that would be so perfect (for me at least).

Thanks for the info I'll have to look more into Contour now.

Another thing I want is accessory ports such as a mic. Also, I know these cameras are tough in their cases, but has anyone drop tested them without protection? And what are the G ratings on these cameras?
