HD Video camera's for ~$600?

After looking at some reviews on the error'net, sorting through good values and good performance has left me a little confused.

I'm looking at the Panasonic HDC-TM20K model which costs a bit over $500. It appears to have a great glass lens which is the single biggest discriminator I have found in "disposable" digicams.

What I want are reasonable record times, good non-professional video quality, easy transfers to DVD's/Computers, and general ease of use. I need something of reasonable size and weight to put in a back pack for hikes that isn't too fragile for outdoor use in remote places.

Is this Panasonic a good choice? Am I missing a better model in the same price range?

TIA,
Sid
