HDTV for Bedroom

My old tube tv died on Saturday night, so I'm looking for a new TV for our bedroom. My wife uses it most of the time and watches a lot of dvd's (not blue ray). Our bedroom is about 10' wide so most viewing with be from 6-8 feet, I'm guessing.

Money is a bit tight right now, so I am not looking at anything high end at all. I saw a couple of 32" RCA's at WalMart for about $350, for example. Those are 720p. I don't want anything cheesy for the wife, but she is not a videophile.

I do have a nice 50" plasma in the living room, but I had the video store install it. What do I need to set it up? (I won't have the hd box immediately, since I have to arrange to bring the old one in., etc)

42" lcd tvs are so cheap right now, I don't think it's worth it to spend $350 on a 32" unless space is tight.

I think you're right. I'm probably picking up a 40" (maybe its 42 I can't remember) Samsung 1080p 60mhZ for $488 at Walmart. The 720p version is only $50 less and the next step up is $150 more so it seems like a good middle of the road.

Thanks.

Hi Shann -

If you will not have digital cable for a while, then I would get a digital QAM antenna.

I have a 42" plasma in my bedroom and I have the QAM antenna hooked up - make sure the tv has two inputs, one for the QAM and the other for a standard cable - if the set you look at has only one, you will need a "combiner", then you will be able to hook up your cable and the antenna and get your local HD broadcast channels plus whatever comes across your cable.

Here in central Illinois, I am able to get 10 HD channels through the airwaves.

My 42" is 720p, and unless I get really close, I cannot tell a huge difference between that and the 1080p (60") I have in my living room.

It's almost the perfect time to buy, most places have new-years or will have super bowl sales.

Good luck and best regards -

I ended up with a Sanyo LCD 42" with 1080p. It was $488 at WalMart. It was called "full on HD"; not really sure that that means anything, but since it was only $50 more than the other 42" Sanyo with 720p I got it.

We set it up last night (with me losing my temper, etc. and my wife calmly working through it) and it looks pretty good even with the the standard cable box. We will switch it out for an HD box and programming when we get to it. The color is a bit duller than my plasma (even comparing standard to standard), but that's probably just some tinkering with the color. My plasma was "calibrated" by the guy that sold me the tv so it should be maximized.

I normally don't spend $500 without researching it to death, but it looked like a fair deal so I grabbed it.
