If you interested their's somemore of my work down in the Tomahawk and hatchet section.......Ray

That is a sweet looking hawk head! The only bad thing about it is that you can't tell it was a RR spike. Did you weld in any tool steel for the cutting edge, to make up for the low carbon of the spike?

This was one of the high carbon spikes plus I quenched it in super quench. Got plenty hard. Did a 350 draw for two hours also. Really don't want it to look like a RR spike, thats why I forged out the head. If I left the head in the back like everyone else does it would just be another RR spike hawk. I know its backwards......

Glad you like it, just trying to come up with something different.....

Hey Raymond, glad to see you over here, welcome! That's a great hawk, first one I've seen out of a RR spike but I lead a very sheltered life.

Hope to see a lot more of your stuff. I've been trying to get near some of the local bridge construction to see if they have any of that 60 rebar, but can't get close enough. I guess the trick will be to find some bridge repair work in the country and strike up a trade with the super.

Anyway, keep em coming, we like show and tell!

Dave

Can you tell me what superquench is? Never heard that term before.I am going to set up a one brick forge this weekend and try to make something recognizable. It'll be my first time but it sounds fun. If all goes well I'll build a forge in the spring. Any info will be great. Thanks

That is a fantastic looking Hawke.
I have made the other style where you dump up the point and put the hole under the head.
I even made one with the head as the cutting edge. But mine looked very ugly with a welded steel handle no eye and a flat right angle blade on the point end. I use it for trimming the lawn egdes.

Yours is the best ever rr spike hawke I have seen. Thank you.

Thanks for the positive comments! As for getting the 60 grade rebar shouldn't be that hard to get, doesn't have to be a bridge job, any commerical or industrial job should be using 60 grade bar. Just tell them Ray sent you.

As far as the super quench goes there's a bunch of different ones out there. Mine was mainly a salt brine with dishing washing soap added. Make sure you use Dawn, just kidding. There's lots of other things that guys add. What your trying to do is make it cool off the steel as quick as possible. The HC spikes to me seem like they get plenty hard just in water, I had some of my super quench made up and just used it. When it gets hard, thats just super......Scott, you got the right attitude. Forging is fun, wish I would have gotten into it 30 years ago.....Ray

Ray,That is just to COOL!!!!
Very nice looking Hawk.Man you have gotten bitten by the hawk bug bad haven't you:D That's cool..
Bruce

Bruce,
That hawk bug just keeps biting me, I got a couple more ideas tonight. See if I can get some sleep without the bug bothering me. I feel something new for tomorrow will be comming out.......:D

I have gotten a couple pieces of rebar with "60" on it at Lowes. Is there a difference in the one at Lowes ant at a commercial work site?

Terry, Thats a good question. I'm surprized that Lowes has 60 grade rebar. It wouldn't hurt to ask Lowe's where they got it? Also look at it for other markings. If you see a foreign countries name on it I'd leave it alone. If you can just by a 2'chunk of it and give it a try. I'm thinking all Lowe's has is 4 bar (1/2") but could be wrong. There's got to be a rebar supplier in you area, if there is give them a call. I would think they'd have some rem's they would just give to you for a song and a dance. Maybe just a dance.....Ray

Ray thanks for the reply.I was inspired by that super hawk,so I stopped at a railyard today and asked for a few old HC spikes. He gave me 5 and said have fun. If he only knew! So I am going to build a 2 brick forge.I figured if I stack 2bricks wrap them with some wire and then core it out I will have basicly a 1brick forge just with a larger hole to place my stock into. Does this sound workable?? By the way my spikes are rusted. Do I nedd to grind off the rust or will it burn off. If all goes well I might have me a new hawk by kickoff sunday!! Thanks,SCOTT!

Scott, The rust will be no problem but not sure about the forge. Give it a try but I'm sure you going to want to step up on a better forge. Lots of good advice out there on building one plus the burner.......Ray

Oh yeah, about that hawk in the picture........IT'S MINE....ALL MINE.......MUHAHAHAHAHA *ahem* sorry about that guys had to get that out of my system. Its gonna be fun (p.S. technically its my wifes but...ya know:D)

That is a great looking 'hawk! Smooth looking lines. Love to see it handled. Doesn't even have a hint of what it was made from. Well done!
Is the spike hardened?

edited for ?

Tom, Glad you like the hawk. Yes it is hardened but just edge quenched. Its one of the high carbon spikes. Sorry that I don't have a handle on it, maybe Kisu, the new owner will get it handled and post a picture of it. I've got way to many ideas on the heads right now to take time to handle any of them. Maybe next week it might happen.....Ray
