Head Light/Lamp Recommendations Please

Howdy,

I am looking for recommendations for a good headlamp. Or is it headlight? Anyway...

My situation is kinda different, in that, in addition for use out of doors, I also want to use in indoors. I clean a theatre for a living and I want a lamp with which I can see behind and under the seats. And since I will be using it a good bit, battery consumption is an issue.

So, it should...

- have a fairly bright beam. Less than an E2 but a good bit greater than a Photon.

- Run on D or 9V cells, have power consumption that is negligible, or use a cell that is so inexpensive that I won't mind buying them.

- Fit my big head (8 1/2 with hair).

- be durable, since it will see a good deal of use.

Any ideas, and feel free to mention other qualities for which I should look.

Princeton Tec, Petzal, and Inova all make lights suitable for your uses. I have a PT Aurora. It works very well.

Checkout the Princeton tec eos. 3xAAA, regulated light with three settings for between 6.5 hours and 60 hours of light with an unbreakable a 1W Luxeon diode.

I use the Petzl Tikka Plus.

I'm waiting for the Tikka XP in 'camo' edition as announced on the IWA 2005. Same as the current Tikka XP but with a red diffusion filter for night vision(instead of a white on the standard model) . 3 levels, boost mode, and battery level indicator!

I've been using the Petzl Tikka Plus like maximus'. Very good light for the money.
It has a comfortable band and is small enough to stuff in your pocket when you're not using it. I actually have it in my medicine/survival bag all the time.

If you want more powerful at the expense of battery life you could try the Princeton Tec EOS.

I cannot add much really but would like to comment that I often use my old original Petzel Tikka around the house, comfortable and very handy during the so common blackouts here in Mexico, the plus model with various brightness levels and tilting body must be nice.

I now have 2 petzl head lamps and love both of them. The latest I got is the Tikka XP, I want to get the MYO XP and may do so in the next month or so. I love these lights, they are very comfortable to wear and because they are LED, they last a long time before you need to change Batterys. Good luck finding a Head lamp. Also I take one on long trips also in case I need to work on the vehicle on the side of the road.

I have a petzl Tactikka Plus and I love it. I've been using it at night here in the house to help change diapers on my newborn son in the middle of the night! :D I use the red lense and it works great. I would think It would be perfect for work in the theater.

Check out the Pelican Heads up Lite. I got one and paid 25 bucks for it.
It comes with a high power Zenon lamp and a regular Krypton lamp (interchangable). It is waterproof to five hundred feet and tough as nails.
Battery life, I think, is up to five hours. Pelican makes lights and cases for hard use environments and industrial scuba. Bad a$$ gear.

I have the TacTikka Plus as well and like it quite a bit. My wife even likes it... that's how you know something is really useful.

I currently have two headlamps I and my girl friend are using.

Both are LED of the 1W variety, both run off of AAA batteries, and both have 3 levels of brightness.

I have the Princton Tec EOS, which I mainly use for Mountain Biking "just in case" as it is small and light, or my girlfriend brings backpacking.

I also use the Petzl Myo XP, which is my main head lamp for hiking, climbing, backpacking, etc.

Both are excellent choices, with the bright beams being very bright and usable, and the dim setting are still functional for reading or camp chores.

Battery life also seems to be good, and beam quality is high, being nice and white, and even.

Furthermore, while my head is not as large as yours is...(it's "only" 7 5/8th's), they will both fit on my climbing helmet, so you should have no trouble there...

Hi Marion-

Kind of an aside, but is this something into which you want to sink your own hard-earned money? If the theater wants the place to be extremely clean they should either give you sufficient overhead lighting or supply your crew with headlamps.

If you're a private vendor and the theater is a customer, it is a solid investment.

Another vote for the Petzl. I had a Petzl Zoom for years but it got a bit outdated so I bought a Petzl Duo 8LED the other year. Its a great lamp, it could be improved by replacing the xenon lamp with a 3w luxeon though :D

I have also seen a Petzl Tikka Plus, they are plenty bright enough for close to mid range work and are really compact and economic on the batteries

WOW - I guess the audience is near unanimous with Petzl. I will definitely check them out.

I have a Pelican Stealthlite, so I will have to look at them too.

Blue-Jays - You hit it on the head, I am a contractor, and I need one anyway. The bonus of using one in the theaters, is that then it is easier to see any loose coinage/bills on the floor, which I get to keep. ; )

I've got an old Princeton Tec Matrix. Like it fir my needs. Has 2 different lamp assemblies, one xenon? and one is LED.

I would look at the Petzl line now for functions and efficiencies.

I do have a punkin head (25" circ) so I'd have to check out potentials for fit concerns, esp if I wereto want to wear over a hat.

Petzl Tikka Plus.

Great run time. Great close range flood beam. Variable brightness settings.
Lightweight.

I find it is the perfect hands-free "personal admin" light.
