I just finished grading all my final exams and turned in the grades for the semester. Tomorrow I get to dress up like a medieval monk for a couple of hours for graduation, then my 8 year old daughter and I are hitting the road for Grand Teton National Park. It will be the first time just the two of us have tried a trip like this. (My wife has to work, unfortunately).

My daughter is thrilled; whether its because of the trip or because she gets to miss school for a week, I'm not sure. (Her teacher is on-board with the plan, so no worries). She does love hiking and woodcraft. Last year she lit her first matchless fire, so we'll try to build on her skills. Hopefully will catch some of the wildlife before it heads to high up for the summer.

There is also supposedly a mountain man rendezvous in Jackson, so we hope to get over there for a day a catch some of it.

If I get an internet connection at some point while we are there we'll post a few pics.

Have fun!! We're headed out that way in 2 weeks! Damn.... have you seen the weather though? Brrrrrrrrrr! Bring your long-handles!

Congrats on completing your grades. Isn't that just lovely :D Should be a great trip, last time I was in the tetons was back in '96. Looking forward to the pictures!

Yep, I just saw today that its going to be on the chilly side. But I'm trying to look on the bright side: less tourists, no bugs. Now if my daughter will just buy the sales pitch. She still wants to bring her swimsuit:eek:.

I might be there next week or the next week for backcountry hiking. Could you let us know about the conditions? I'm expecting some deep snow.

Don't be surprised if you get snowed on. It's been a very wet and cool spring here and it doesn't show any sign of ending soon. :grumpy: I imagine that the creeks/rivers will be high as well; there are some flood watches in the Bighorns and Wind River Range so the melt is sure to be in full force in the Tetons shortly.

Ouch! We're headed to Deadwood and that area first, then on to Cody and up to the Beartooth highway and into Yellowstone.... Hope the highway is nice and dry!!

The weather can warm up fast if it wants to! ha ha

You have two weeks yet so it's hard to say what the weather will be like then. FWIW the East Entrance was closed for a while about 10 days ago by avalanches.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to think of some back-up activities while we're driving out. If you have any thoughts on that I'd love to hear. Although we'll probably brave the trails regardless. Is the weather pretty comparable if you back down the valley to DuBois or Lander?

I'm headed to the Winds in July for a solo trip, but I'm sure by then it will be nice:)

You're welcome. There are a lot of things to see otherwise, I guess it depends on what interests you. The conditions should be better in Dubois or Lander. If you go south of Lander you can check out the Oregon Trail, Atlantic City, etc. If you go a bit further south the Red Desert is an interesting place.

Since you mentioned a rendezvous earlier there's the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale. Cody has the Buffalo Bill Heritage Center which has an amazing firearms collection. I haven't been to either museum so I'm just going by hearsay.

There's still a lot of snow up high....here you go NOHRSC Interactive Map

Your gonna love it. The Beartooth into Yellowstone is stunning. I went in july and there were still 10 foot high snowbanks. If the Blackhills and the Badlands are on the way , you need to check them out also. Id like to be going with you.

Billy's is the best burger going!!! Jackson is an amazing town, and the Tetons are some of the most beautiful mountains in the USA. Enjoy your time with your daughter. She will remember this trip for the rest of her life.

We are doing the SD route, so we'll hit the Black Hills. I've taken my daughter to Yellowstone, but not to GTNP. IMO the Tetons are the most stunning mountains, so I want her to get to experience them too.

I'm headed back to the Wind River Range for a solo trip in July, so I plan to check out the Mountain Man Museum in Pinedale then. I think I 've mentioned before that it was my interest in the Mountain Men that really energized my interest in the outdoors as a boy. So I'd like to see it.

I'll try to post pics/updates as I get a chance.
