That Rocks!

I don't think you'll be bringing many knives back from the show, unless you buy someone elses.

Good Dr. Lathe, are you going to have a table at the Las Vegas Classic?

I hope so, but I didn't see your name on the list on A.T. Barr's site.

Wow ! Fantastic ! As always ...
I was always impressed by your knives,
particularly by the plunge cut...
How do you make plunge cut so smooth ???
Do you have a trick ?

Alain,

To get the rounded plunges, I move the knife to the side as I'm plunging in. As I'm working the plunge area the blade is always moving sideways!! Besides practice there is no other trick other than how I move the blade against the belt. No wheel radius, no breaking down the edges of the belts!! I rough my blades with fresh 36 and 50 grit belts. After heat treat I do the final, more complex grinding with a 120 and 220. I spend a little extra time polishing the plunge areas with a 45 Norax belt, slightly overhanging the wheel to make the hand finishing easier. At some point, I'm going to set up another grinder to run 1" wide belts for doing more complex grinds on smaller blades.

I DO appreciate the compliments :)

Thank you very much Neil for this invaluable information!
I made only few knives until now
but I think that the plunge cut is the most difficult part to make.
I will try yout technique on my next try...

Thank you to share your work, it is a constant source of inspiration...

Wow this one is sweet, Neil!

I was looking at this and thinking of how I would react if it WASN'T Neil Blackwood's knife. I would be STUNNED!!! I (we?) tend to take 'for granted' the level of your workmanship and your eye for design.

That's not to say I'm not stunned now. Just a little reality check. You're AWESOME!!!!!

Fantastic knife Neil.., hope to say "Hi" and meet you in Ls Vegas. Didn't realize you'd be at Larry's table, but that is helpful information...

Love that big wide blade and those bevels. That ironwood has great figuring. That knife definitely is the total package.
